BMW 3 series (2.2liter vs. 2.5liter)
I'm wondering if anyone has test drived the new BMW 3 series. Here in Canada they sell a 320i and a 325i series. I don't seem to see that in the states anywhere. But thats not what i'm asking. I'm wondering if the performence diffrence between the two is considerable or not? The price diffrence i'm aware of. Does it really make such a big deal? I know the 3.0liter engine would be best, but it's out of my budget. Any tips or idea's would be welcome..

A big (well maybe not too big) difference between the Canadian 320i and 325i sedans are the engines.
The 320i has a 2.2-L, 168 hp engine: 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) is 8.7 seconds for the manual and 9.8 seconds for the steptronic/auto. The 325i has a 2.5-L, 184 hp engine: 0-100 km/h is 7.6 seconds for the manual and 8.6 seconds for the steptronic/auto. I didn't read too carefully but I'm guessing that a lot of the features and packages (sport, premium, etc) between the two are similar, if not the same. So the big thing about these two cars is their performance, with the 325i being a little over a second faster than the 320i in their respective manual and automatic transmission catagories. I'd say that if you are interested in having that extra little bit of push under the hood of your BMW then go for the 325i. I took all this from http://www.bmw.ca which is the website for BMW of Canada. Other than that I don't really have much more to tell you. I don't live in Canada so I haven't had a chance to drive anything there.

Yeah.. I don't understand why they don't have a 2.2 in the USA? Stupid none the less.. All I know is that the base retail of the 320i here is $33,900.. Let me translate that into us dollars for you = $21,189 USD... Remind yourself next time to buy a car here in Canada...hehe..

On another forum some guy said that he had tried the 2.2L and 2.5L and it was a big diff on one of the older models. I'll have to try them out I guess. But being used to my wife's Cadi STS with 300HP... It seems everything is weak that I drive.. We'll see how BMW feels on these lower end models.

That's a good question. Those BMW marketers must have a reason why they don't sell a 2.2-L in the US. Anyone want to comment? I'd be interested in hearing people's take on it. Personally, I'd rather have the big engine to go with the badge. Maybe BMW feels like the 320i wouldn't be very popular in that price catagory? |

I think it was because the Americans wanted more power. They didn't even bring the 316 here but there was a 318. It is gone. Then there was the 323. It is now gone and all that is left is the 325, 330, and the M3.

Well.. Compared to my Cadi STS 300Hp... The 320i is a useless buy.. As you guys suggested.. Go with the bigger motor.. I test drove it and liked it, but I will be back to try the 325i. Since the 320i is underpowered with the automatic. With the standard it would probably be very nice indeed. I'll let you know how I like the 325i whenever I go...

Although the badge says 325i/xi, in reality it only boasts a 2.3L engine.

325 > 320
Test drove both the 320 (2.2l) and the 325 in the UK - both 2001 models. The difference in power is easily noticeable - I bought the 325 (2002 model).

I'm going tommorw to try the 325i out. But the 320i was definetly weak. I'm worried however that the 325i may seem to weak still and I can't afford anything more then that. I really have to try it.. But, doing a little test drive around the dealship I noticed that the automatic kicked back a gear on a small hill. I'm guessing however the 325i is going to be more to my liking.
