Audio and C1500 Pickup

The radio in a used truck I bought is dead and wanting to replace. Changed out the fuse just to check and it immediatly blew. THe radio came on maybe a second, second and a half, before I died....

Is there a good place on the internet to check and see what wires to check, or thing to consider in looking for in replacing the wiring for a radio is this truck.

Any leads would be appreiated.

club knowledge has a good audio forum that you could get in and ask around. I replaced my stereo with a sony head unit. But I think that is a different story than what you are doing.

okay seeing as how you have a 1991 chevy c1500 you'll need a wiring harness to go over the factory wire connectors. Theres a box under your dash board, its silver, to the right side of the steering wheel, Disconect this from the underside of the dashboard and you will see three (3) connectors and a antennae cord. Disconnect those and leave for now. In the center of your dash there should be the tape deck / equalizer (depending on what you had) . Take off the covering where the air vents are. (just pull from the bottom outward, it should just fall off from then) . (oh yeah you'll need the mounting bracket thing also) and take out the vents (be careful, the springs are tricky). install the vents and springs into the new mounting bracket thing along with the radio housing. Those three wires/connectors and the anttenae cord come up through that opening just under the air vents of the mounting bracket and through the radio housing, then put the whole thing in place, making sure you dont crimp the wires or pinch them between the bracket and dashboard. Now connect the wiring harness to the radio and take the antennae cord and connect it to the radio (with the use of an adapter) and slide the radio in. Be carefull, any radio above 6 1/4" long will be a toughy to get in.. very tough, (i have a 6 1/2 " in mine and it BARELY fits with a little force) . Then that should be it... Oh yeah, take out the stock radio too that came with the truck (take off the dash panel with the 4 hex bolts, then the bolts around the radio and A/C control (the two bolts next to the a/c controls are a bitch, but just try and take those out firsT) and put in a little cd pocket you could get at your local audio store..

So an overview of what you need.
Radio Wiring Harness (that will fit a 89-95/96 model truck) (and usually includes the radio antennae adapter)
Mounting Bracket housing (that will fit a 89-95/96 model truck)
The Cubby hole thing that you can get at your automotive audio parts store (for a 89-95 truck)

Send an email to crutchfield electronics. They have a plug in adapter for you. You can also find them at walmart and radio shack. Do not cut the wires unless you are going to solder. It really sucks when you are riding down the road and a speaker cuts out because you used cheap crimp connecters. This is my best advice since I have replaced over 30 car stereos.

does the silver box you mentioned control the power to the radio etc? all mine went dead at once and if it does what does it cost to replace it? (88 C/k 4x4)

Just put an after market in.
