what happens when your air filter falls off

the heat shield became a completely flat piece of metal. either i ran over it, or the 10 cars following me did.

i was driving and heard a big clump, i thought i ran over a skunk or something. i looked back and it looked like my catalytic convertor was laying in the middle of the road. threw on my hazards, went on a side street, and looked underneat the car. NO AIR FILTER!... i spun around and went against traffic to get the filter.

i found the bracket that holds it on the other side of the street, and what faintly resembled a heat shield on the side by the curb.

if you have an extension people i suggest checking it every other fillup... i finally got some lowering ramps for my car last nite and they work great.

anyone know how to make a custom heat shield out of some kinda soft material? that cheap heat shield on the right in the pic fell off after a few hundred feet. it was so cheap.

your engine has ingested alot of dirt from the air. i suggest a oil change.

yea good suggestion. first im gonna take off the whole intake system and clean it, then in a few days change my oil. i felt up the inside of the extension a little and it's covered in dust.

you getting a new intake? Cuz if that happens once it can happen again due to poor craftmenship or was it the way you fitted it?

I'm sure in the 50 ft. or so he traveled the engine injested 42 particles of dirt. It's not THAT crutial to run a filter on the intake.

An oil change wont do anything to help your dirty intake. Sucking in dirty air wont make your oil dirty either. If you want to clean it, get some "air intake cleaner" (not carb\choke cleaner) and spray it on and around your throttle body. Then wipe it with a clean cloth. make sure you get both sides of the butterfly. Then with the engine running, spray a SMALL amount in SHORT bursts into the throttle plate while opening it manually (but not too much).

actually ,its been noted that alot of the air intake cleaners are exact same as carb cleaners distributed by the same company because some people look and say "carb? i dont have a carb"

so since it works the same way, they just rename it. this has been said in road and track and motortrend.. so i dunno wat u should get.

Actually, Carb cleaner and intake air cleaner (or throttle plate cleaner) are not the same. Most Carb cleaners are alcohol based and are caustic. Gumout, to name one intake air cleaner, is oil based. Using carb cleaner on a throttle plate can strip it of its protective coating (if it has one). Buyer beware

ps: usually you can tell by the smell. oil based cleaners have a sweet smell to them.

nothing if u have the AEM air bypass valve.

other wise u injest water into the engine, which is obviously bad.






and i didnt say ALL intake cleaners are the same, i said ALOT are.
i know that some are different as well.
