new car...alarm ? help

I just bought a 91 crx hf today. It already has a black widow alarm installed in it. However the previous owner said it caused two alternators to go bad. So she had best buy...where she bought it and who installed it dissable it. She said they just took a fuse out. Now would the alarm actually be able to cause this. If so what would it be a bad ground maybe. Now that i have the car i do my own work on all my cars, so i was wondering what it might be and what i should check. I don't want to let the alarm go to waste.

I'd make the lady who sold you the car pay Best Buy to figure out the problem. Also, if it's a wiring problem, then that's Best Buy's fault since they installed it.

look at the relay that flashes the light when the alarm is armed/disarmed ....... there was a company back in the day that was INFAMOUS for showing how to hook it up wrong in their wiring instructions. It basically leaves the relays closed all the time and draws like 1-1.5 amps continously when the car is not on.

Not sure exactly what you mean, but the alarm is a black widow 2800 model.

I believe Black Widow is a DEI product and you might be able to test things out using a online manual service at www.directechs.com. Normally an alarm will not make an alternator go bad because the battery is where the current is being drawn from , unless the car is running. So if you have your car running test the voltage from the battery. It should be above 12 volts to around 13.5/13.8. If its below 12, it may be your alternator. Check you meter reading at the battery when it is NOT running. You want as close to 12 volts as possible. If the battery is weak and won't hold a charge close to 12 volts, it's harder for your alternator to work, causing it to fail. It won't just stop working in most cases, it usually happens over a period of time. If you feel confident, check the ground (black), constant 12v (red), and switched 12v (yellow). Make sure they are hooked up to the right wires under the dash. Hook a meter up to the battery, plug in the fuses on the alarm and see if there is a major current draw. If it looks hacked or messy in there, don't try anything, go get it checked by someone MECP certified.
