So i filled up my civic for the first time...only had her about 2 weeks now, and i smelled gas in the cabin. I figured it was just the air from teh gas station so i drove home. Later that day, i still smelled it, even outside the car...so i hounded out the scent to be coming from underneath right by the fuel tank. Heh, i was kinda freaked out. Turns out that the fuel pipe (from the tank, to the cap) has a few rust holes in it, so i can only fill her up to about 8-9 gallons. hope its not too dangerous er anything.




also, just somethin im thinkin about...I wanna fix my rear brakes. The drums must be REALLY worn cause the e-brake doesnt work (i can still push it when engaged). I know its not the cable cause i already tightened it. Well, i took off the rear wheel and you should be able to just pull the drum off, right? Like it just pops off? I couldnt get it off for some reason. I probably woulda figured it out, but it was dark, and decided to just go in.
any thoughts?

Make sure the E-brake cable is not overtightened.
Remove wheel
If the drum doesn't slide off, a few TAPS with a hammer should break it loose.

I would not drive the car around like that, leaking fumes & gas. KABOOM!

I had the same problems with my drums. I took off the wheel but couldn't get off the drum. AS it was stated before take a hammer and tap around the outside until you can either get something in to help pry it off or just keep tapping it until it falls off. After I removed my drum I found that it was absolutly torn up. I think it is a leaky line. Check you you connections and your lines for leaks. THis could be the problem.

On the gas tank there is a sealer you can Buy at NAPA then you can coat the inside of the filler tube so you dont leak fuel. The sealer hardens so to will seal. Also if you have holes in the fuel system you are probly losing pressure and that will cause you to get bad gas mileage.

I know its in the pipe from the tank to the cap cause i only smell it when i fill it. When the gas is below 8 gallons, i dont smell it anymore.

at least i dont smoke, lol.

In the mid-80s there was a Honda recall on this issue (damn, I am showing my age by pulling all this shit out of my ass all the time ), but I don't think it was specifically for our car....I would call Honda...I suspect they will fix it for free

I still cant get the drum off. I tried hammer, i tried completely loosening the ebrake screw. Nothing. Sprayed the lugs with wd40...even got extra help to pull it off and it wont budge.


Is there ANY way to get this damn thing off?
am i forgetting something?

When you've already used massive violence, there are two more paths: fire and ice.
Heat it up with the torch, but try not to catch anything on fire.
Also, you can try blasting it with a fire extinguisher. We used to do that at the refinery. Some of these extinguishers create massive cold from the drop in pressure, and sometimes cooling something wayyyy down for a bit will help jar it loose.
If you're heating it up, keep a wet blanket handy, like one of those leftover/stolen from Uhaul. Wet blanket'll put out just about any fire.

Wait...hold up...there should be two threaded holes in the drum - you can work the drum off by screwing screws into these holes..I don't remember what size bolts they are, but I believe they use a 12mm socket...without too much fanfare you can probably figure it out...As you screw the bolts into the holes...it forces the drum to 'walk' off the shoes along the threads...there are similar holes in the front discs for the same purpose.

You can also get the disc brakes from an Integra (90-93 is a straight bolt-on) and have rear discs - Drum brakes suck

ok . . . . When you wait TOO LONG for brake replacement the drums become grooved & the shoe is beyond the drum. Therefore putting the bolts WONT do a damn thing. You must remove the rubber plug on the inside to loosen the clevis(adjustment screw)

fuck it, took it to sears to let them fuck with it.
The guy told me that my left rear was completely frozen, my right rear had a leak and barely worked. And my calipers only worked one way.

hehe, gggrreeat.
Well, its all good now.
...just got the car too =/
