GTP Vs. Eclipse Spyder

Hey guys, this is my first post in this forum, so here goes...

I drive a 1997 GTP (grand prix), currently this thing is COMPLETELY STOCK, it's even had a deer hit recently so the front right fender and hood portion and all is pretty mashed up. So here's the story...

Coming home from a pizza shop I pass this convertible Eclipse Spyder - lowered, exhaust, rims - it didn't look too bad. I've heard this one was turbo so I had to tempt things. He was behind me at a light that's right before an on-ramp. We were both revving, when the light turned green we both darted off for the on ramp. I was a little excited so I was going just a smidgent too fast getting on the freeway so I to slow it down alittle, but once we were both in a free lane we really got on it.

He pulled SLIGHTLY on me all the way up to 120, where I held off because I feared police interaction, at this point he passes me so I say f' it, and lay it to the floor. We are cruising at 120 or better for SEVERAL miles, my speed limiter kicked in twice, after the second time I knew I wasn't going to gain anymore. He was a couple of a car lenths on me, hitting his limiter at about 130, so I flashed my lights and had him get off at the next exit so we could chat. Come to find out that the thing IS turbo (I assumed) with the full exhaust and CAI and a Greedy blow-off valve and a few other things, he also had Z-rated tires. He was pretty damn impressed with my STOCK GTP. So, I invited them to partake in a little smoking session and we cruised around for awhile can called it a day!

I have a 3.4" pulley sittin' in my car, I wished it would have been installed. Anyone reading this in the Ohio/Central Ohio area with a puller? Thanks!

-Doc

BTW - It was a five speed

nice race
dsm joonz jew!!

if you get achance to race a worked gsx i think it will stomp you,(no offence) those care limit is at 160 and with simple mods can make a easy 350hp@wheels. think twice about dsm.

but you havea really nice car cant wait till you get the new pully in!

good job

I can't wait for the pulley either, I've been told by multiple GPers that the difference is night and day. After a few mods and a run at the track, I'll post times and all that happy jazz. Thanks for the compliments!

I posted a story up a while back(can't remember the title for the life of me) about a modded GTP absolutely murdering my friend's turbo Rx7. The supercharger was IMMENSLEY loud! I still remember it to this day how damn loud it was. Drowned out everything, lol. I'll try and find the thread using the handy dandy search function...

I read that one awhile ago when I was searching forums for GTP related stuff. If you could hear his supercharger over your friends turbo then I guarentee he has at least a 3.25" pulley with I/H/E and probaly a DHP PCM.

If I add a 3.4" pulley, a decent CAI, and a cat-back exhaust w/DHP I should be in the mid-high 13's according to the sig/times I've been reading. All that stuff might cost $1000 not including install. So, for about $1300 one can have a solid 13 sec car.

Nice job on that race. GM did a good thing when it made the GTP.

as for the gsx making 350 wheel hp on basi mods. it depends on what year the gsx is. the second gens can no way get 350 wheel hp from the stock turbo. the stock turbo on the second gens are pretty small and are only good for 16 psi. after that, the turbo will pretty much be useless. the first gens, the earlier ones that came with a 14 G turbo, those can be boosted alittle higher, and they are also alittle bit lighter, but not by much. but still, even a 16G turbo upgrade you can only boost that to 16-19psi as well, becuase it still runs on the same compressor housing, but the compressor wheel is alittle bit bigger so it will flow more air under the same boost.
