Whites shouldn't teach black history?
http://www.newsnet5.com/news/2360897/detail.html
That was one of the dumbest things I've read in a long time. Does that mean a Nigerian teacher can't teach European history? Nobody of Chinese decent can teach the history of Egypt? Better keep the Mexicans away from any references to British colonialism in southeast Asia. Some people don’t think race matters. Others think race relates to everything. Again, the truth lies somewhere in between. Among other things, your race does play a part on how you see the world and how it sees you. That matters. This stupidity out of Oberlin Ohio takes it way to far.

Something that really confuses me, why is it alright for an "African American" person to make a racially stereotypical statement, yet if a European person does the same it becomes racism?
Saying you can't teach something on the premise of race is a racially charged statement as it is.... This whole segregation situation is getting ridiculous! Between this school in New York for gay kids to go to, so they won't feel segregated and this, it is beyond a bad joke! Where is the logic in "if we put all the gay kids together, they won't feel segregated"? Are we taking the whole segregation/racism thing a little too far in our 'modern' society?

Ray - I think the focus on race is getting way out of hand.
Quote:
OBERLIN, Ohio, Updated 1:33 p.m. EDT July 28, 2003 -- A group of parents said they will fight a possible decision to allow a white teacher to lead classes in black history at Oberlin High School. NewsChannel5 reported that a scheduling conflict could cause the district to reassign the black teacher who has taught the course for seven years. Using a white teacher at Oberlin High School would send the wrong message to black students, said A.G. Miller, an associate professor of American and African religious history at Oberlin College. "The message is that we are not concerned about the importance of your historical background ... that that is less important than a schedule conflict," said Miller, whose three children graduated from Oberlin High School. Jaqui Willis, a black Oberlin parent, said the teacher is a role model and that removing him from the class would be detrimental to students. The parents have protested the move to the school board, but the district's superintendent, Beverly Reep, has not commented on the case. Reep told parents at a school board meeting that scheduling issues would be addressed this week. Schools and community leaders in the Cleveland area are split over the issue of whether blacks should be the only ones to teach black history. In Cleveland, white and black teachers teach black history. A black teacher teaches black history at Shaker Heights High School, but a white teacher handles classes on oppression and human relations, both which deal extensively with race relations and slavery. Little research has been done to determine whether same-race teachers lead to higher achievement by minority students. Ronald Ehrenberg, director of Cornell University's Higher Education Research Institute, said many researchers steer clear of the topic out of fear of being attacked. Michael Williams, interim director of Cleveland State University's black studies program, said schools should choose a black teacher if that person is most qualified, not just because the teacher happens to be black. If two teachers are equally qualified, Williams gives the edge to the black teacher. "That person still has the advantage of the culture," said Williams, who is black. "They understand the nuances of the culture." Phyllis Yarber Hogan, a member of the Oberlin Black Alliance for Progress, said a white teacher wouldn't be well-suited to teaching students about subjects like slavery. "When you talk about slavery, students need to understand it is not our fault," she said. "Our ancestors did nothing wrong to be enslaved. "How do you work through that when the person teaching it is the same type of person who did the enslaving?"

I heard about this the other day and was extremely livid when I heard. Everytime I hear the african american bitch about something such as this is pisses me off. I could have sworm they fought for racial equality, am I wrong? Where's the racial equality in this. It's the damn worthless Rainbow Coalition and NAACP, who I consider to be a bunch of racists, who keep causing problems. For them to continually bring up arguments such as this its just setting the whole equality thing back more and more. I tend to believe that one of the biggest reasons for racism staying alive is things like this. If things were left alone then the entire country(except for those backwood white folks who will always be colorblind) would move forward and equality would set in. Its just like the new argument of saying there are not enough blacks in major league baseball. Well so what, do you hear any white people bitching b/c of the 95% african american ratio in the NBA or a large percentage of african americans in the NFL? NO! B/c we don't care, we just like sports and we don't give a rats ass if there is more blacks or yellow or pink people playing the sport. I think that the appeal of baseball may just not be as big as the NBA or NFL to african american kids. Look in the minor leagues, majority or which are white. We are never going to become an equal society until the bitching stops.

Jeez talk about reverse-racism, if ever there was an example needed this statement just sums it all up.

i seen nothing wrong with a white teacher teaching anything that relates to my race, im black and asian (screen name) its actually kinda funny. we were discussing the japanese internment camps (im korean), and she kept looking at me, and asking me how i felt, i was thinking about telling her the truth, my great parents were probably overjoyed, (whole nother story). the only reason i wouldn't want a white teacher to teach a subject like this is if i felt he/she was racist, or somewhat biased

History is subjective. There are many interpretations to each event, and of course, the assertions made by historians are coloured [excuse the unintentional pun] by their own beliefs. For example, the history of the British Empire would be told entirely differently by the English to the version told by an Indian,or a Maori,or an Aborigine. What matters in history is that a fair and balanced interpretation be put on the evidence that is recorded. It is false justice to suggest that ethnic history should be the exclusive preserve of the descendants of that race.To promotre one bias over another is not the solution. It is the content of the history lesson, not the heritage of the teacher, that matters.Push for a more balanced version of events if you have to,but don't kid yourself that demanding that black history should be taught from a black-only perspective.
History is like a coin, usually it has two faces. The best way to look at a coin from all angles is to balance it on its side.Only then can you observe both sides at the same time. |
