Unhappy Maxima 'changes' after ECU change...

So thanks to all your advice -- I did figure out that not only were 2 fuel-injectors gone ..but the ECU was not sending signal to one ...

I had dealership confirm all this - and got another mechanic to replace the ECU ...couple of results:

-- now with the new ECU - I could not find the exact *same* ECU model/serial# but the one I got was for the same prod-month/year also ..strange?? but anyway - the engine light is constantly ON

-- 2nd problem is that -unlike before- the car shifts very hard - too hard into 2ND gear ..a noticeable 'thud' which could give an old man whiplash!
Why is this happening?

For us regular no-access to dealer types -- once I do check the ECM long/short light flashing ..how do I know what the code means?

Does anyone have a chart explaining ECM codes?
Will re-setting the ECU help? I just learned that u can reset the ECU from inside the passenger compartment - has anyone tried?

..ok too many questions - I will stop.. hope to have it runnin smooth ..this car has been all over the NEVADA desert (mojave) and AZ ...too many memories to give up on it!!!

Is your new ECU from a 5 speed? If so, you'd better start hunting around for an ECU that was in a Auto.

Yes, you can reset your ECU and you should look for one for an auto or just reset it and drive it around for a couple of weeks so that it can learn your driving habits/pattern, once it does you should be fine.

No the ECU was from the same month/year/model & auto (not manual) -- the wreckers asked me all this before sending it. And their a reputed well-known auto-parts wrecker here.

I cant seem to find any posts to see

-a- what different 'funtions' the ECU is responsible for

and

-b- how the ECU could affect tranny // gear shifting... whether its modifi-able...

hmmm...
