stick vs auto

I'm leaning towards the automatic steptronic for the 330ci instead of the manual.. traffic, hills, etc etc.

Any pro's / con's for either system aside from the basics (ie stick is faster, more fuel efficient, clutch replacements, gear strippings hehe)

If you're looking for a sporty, fun, and more of an aggressive type of drive, then go with the stick. But if you're wanting a more laid back, cruising type of ride, then go with steptronic.
I've been driving a 328is in a stick since 97'. No problems with the tranny or clutch so far. My first experience with the BMW steptronic was last year when I rented an X5. Although it did have a nice kick when shifting, it didn't seem necessary. Meaning, it didn't give me the same feeling as shifting with a clutch. The automatic transmission was just fine, and I didn't feel the need to shift. (just for passing or hills)
I commute 24 miles round trip everyday to New York City, and at first I admit it was annoying at times in traffic. But, I got used to it very quickly. I think it really comes down to sport or cruise and that's a personal thing. So personally, the stick is more fun for me to drive. Once I'm away from the traffic and head for the twisty wooded roads of upstate New York, it's all worth it! Either way you go, is all good man.
The 330's are beautiful anyway you slice it. You should test drive both versions (if you haven't done so already). Also test drive a model with and without the Sport Package. There's a huge difference in the handling and styling too. It's worth the extra money.

I've tested the 330ci and the 530i. Will probably go back in a week or 2 and try the 325 and 330 again... Going this weekend to test the audi a4.

Let me know how the A4 compares to the 330.

Definetly check out the BMW Sport package. Personally, the bimmers without the Sport package, feel just like regular luxury sedans.
Sport package includes:
Lower and stiffer suspension, 16x7 sport rims and tires, side skirts,
Sport seats that prevent you from sliding around on cornering and more.

The 530 gives you more interior room, but the car is heavier than the 330, so 0-60 is slower. It's the same engine in a bigger chassis. Go with the 540 if you go with the 5 series.
330 vs 325....basically 3.0 liter vs 2.5 liter. The 330 has a better horsepower and torque ratio. The extra .5 liters is a suprisingly big difference.

I have a steptronic 330i and I wished it was manual. If you enjoy driving, the manual is a must. But if you're into just the luxury and the cruising, and not much racing around, stick to the steptronic. The only thing that i don't like about the manual shifting is it has a pretty noticeable lag. But then, you won't be racing around so I don't see the point. The automatic still provide adequate thrust and keeping its gear when you want to have a little bit more fun. I can easily redline my car eventhough it's an automatic. BMW are known for their manual transmission, you should definitely check it out as well. It's really down to a matter on how you see your car, transportation? or for enjoyment?

Ugh... don't even get into the 530..... if your looking at a 5 series get the 540 (insert tesosterone here). If you want the 330 I would recommend the stick... the smaller car is supposed to be a sporty car. The auto/step is for the people who want to own a BMW the stick is for those who want to experience a BMW.
