how long can a cherokee last?

I've been recently looking into buying a used SUV for under 9k. Ford Explorer Sports and Jeep Cherokees are my main targets.

I found an explorer with 75k on it fully loaded for 7500. From what I've read, I can take that to 130k and shouldn't really have to worry too much.

I know the Cherokee is dependable and I see a ton of jeeps with a lot of mileage on them. I i recently found a 2000 with 85k on it. I know it has a lot to do with how it was treated, but what mileage can i take a cherokee to?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Treat a Cherokee good and it will last forever(not kidding)
My Cherokee is the MOST Reliable Vehicle Ive ever driven, owned, or seen. Mine has 160,xxx miles on it and it only needs a new PCV Valve and some rocker adjustment.

I have only had ONE problem since Ive owned my Jeep, the Rubber O-Ring for the Filter mount started to leak. $10 and 30minutes was all it took to fix it myself. You don't even need to really baby a Jeep and it will last forever. I offroad A LOT and my Jeep loves it. All my Jeep asks for in return is a little gas, maintenece, and some TLC.

Go for the the Cherokee, they look better, are more reliable, are way better for Off-Road adventures, have much better power, and a superior drivetrain.

Good Luck

Thumbs up

My '89 currently has 224,000+ on it, and it's still running strong. The guy I bought it from said he overhauled the 4.0 @170,000, but I don't know to what extent. Interior is still in good shape, suspension and chassis are still good, all glass is good, 4WD still works great; I'm hoping to get another 75,000+ out of it. Best running automobile I've ever driven. In my book, Jeep certainly lives up to their reputation.

As for repairs, all I can claim is having to replace the radiator resivior and it needs a new muffler. BTW, I've put 25,000+ on it over the past 2 years.

I own a 1988 Cherokee that currently has 410,000 miles on it! The original AMC 6-cyl engine went about 350,000 miles before quiting. With good care and maintenance, these Cherokees will last

I have to agree with the above although I have had to do regular maintance to my jeep. The clutch and the starter went at different times. I have added tires, belt, battery, etc the usual stuff. Anyway I bought my 91 Cherokee 4dr/2wd 5 sp for $1700 at 153000 miles. I now have 208000 miles. I figure I am into my jeep for about $3000 total with stero and the already mentioned and I don't think there is any letting up. It runs better than my wifes 96 Chev Cav and my friends Toyota 4 runner (piece of junk). Come to think of it. My jeep runs better than most peoples cars that I know. Jeeps just run good. The main reason for that is the inline 6 4.0. I believe that this motor has seven bearings on the cranck. That is great, makes it really tough. then think about the clearance, stance (wider than explorer/blazer/4runner/pathfinder) which is great for off roading. Then there is the space. A 4dr has more cargo room than most, if not all of the above mentioned. Mileage is the next best thing. My jeep has better mileage that the explorer/blazer/4 runner for sure. I have friends that have almost new explorer/blazer/4 runner and they hate my jeep's great mileage. Speed. Jeep cherokee is one of the faster off the line suv around. Now my advantages may be becasue I have a 2wd but that is good enough for me. Go for the jeep. easy to work on, reliable (4.0 inline 6 better than the four) and most affordable.

Angry

I would have to disagree with all of the above statements! I bought my 90 Jeep Cherokee Laredo in March after the owner before me had dropped $1700 into for it to pass safety. I figured after that much money was put into it that I was getting a great deal.
I was dead wrong! A week after purchasing the Jeep, I had to put another $1400 into because all of the fuel injectors were leaking and had to be replaced along with a new fuel pump hose and clamp and some repairs to the cruise control wiring. (Which by the way still doesn't work along with the AC)
Then 2 months later I start to get this crazy shake at 90km and over which progressively got worse and to the point where I can no longer drive on the highway. I've spent another $300 dollars to try and fix the problem and have brought it to 3 garages and still no one can tell me exactly what's wrong with it or how to fix it.

While the mechanics were looking over my Jeep they also discovered that my engine is leaking oil and transmition fluid and along with the leaks it has a rough sounding noise coming from the rear axle differential.

If I had of known I was going to have this much trouble with Jeep I would have stayed clear!

As soon as I can afford to, I'm switching back to CHEVY (built like a rock!) and never looking back!!! I may have just simply got a lemon but it has turned me off Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge and everything associated with Jeep for life!!!

A pissed off Jeep owner!

P.S. Thanks for all your help with my crapy Jeep on this forum though, I do appreciate all your input.

You are my mortal enemy now.

Your Jeep was probably owned by a dumbass that couldnt tell the difference between a piston or his dog. He probably treated the Jeep like shit. You treat any car like shit and it WILL fall apart.

As for your Chevy, have you ever been to a Junkyard? Last time I was at one. I saw 1 Dodge, No Jeeps, and 80+ Chevys. But go ahead and run back to your POS Chevy. Thats one less bastard to have the pleasure of owning a MOPAR. Just because you had a mistreated Jeep doesnt mean they ALL suck.

But before you get rid of your Jeep, offroad it to the tallest peak in your area(it WILL make) and throw yourself off.
Thank You

Keep On Jeepin On

Re: how long can a cherokee last?

Sounds like someone needs to get laid! Get off the roids man and chill out! Walk over and give your precious Jeep a kiss, it looks like the thing has never even seen a dirt road before, so I'm sure it's nice and clean for you to embrace it in a nice long lip-lock.
I'll make sure to wave to you on the side of the road when I drive by in longest lasting truck out there.

CHEVY POWER ALL THE WAY BUDDY!

P.S. The previous owner was lady in her 40's I highly doubt she abused my Jeep, but nice try...I'll be surprised if I can go a month without having to put more money into that Chrysler Crap!

HAHHAHAHAHAHAH Nice and Clean HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH

Damn straight I love my Jeep and I am Damn Happy with it! 160,XXX Miles and I can still offroad the hell out of it. Im also happy that there is one less bastard to be owning a MOPAR. People who own Jeeps and dont love em need to be stabbed.

P.S. Abuse and lack of maintence is the same thing fuck head.

That is why I learned to repair my Jeep myself. Most shops that "fixed" my Jeep in the past just screwed it up or made the problem worse. After deciding that I would repair everything myself, I found alot of stuff done incorrectly. Since I've been my own mechanic, I've had practically NO problems whatsoever. It sounds to me like the Jeep wasn't maintained or repaired properly, and it is suffering because of that

A real Jeep owner knows that Real Jeeps don't leak, they mark their territory

J, My 91 Explorer has 150,000 and is running strong. The only problem I have with it is nickel and dime stuff mostly electrical glitches with power windows and locks.

Yes

It depends on how you drive it, its hard to not haul ass everyewhere when you have the 4.0L. If you drive like a "normal" person you can get anywheres from 18-25mpg, but if you drive like me you get around 13-20mpg. Thats not bad for a powerful I-6 SUV Engine, not bad at all.

Let us know WHEN you get a Jeep

BTW- When you check out a Jeep there are a few things that are a must to check for. Make sure the water pump is not leaking, the mech fan clutch is in good shape, no major oil leaks especially around the front and rear main seals. Also, check the oil filter mount for leaks because that is a trouble spot for leaks but an easy one to fix. Let the AC run for a few minutes to make sure there are no water leaks at tubing couplings. Lastly check the roof for paint chipping and bubbling.

Those are the most frequent problems with used Jeeps(135k+ miles) Just make sure you get a Jeep that hasnt been f*cked all to hell and back. A good Jeep will go a LONG ways!

Good Luck
