Is the "mclaren4sale" no longer for sale?
I heard a rumor that Dan Kennedy's McLaren F1 - still featured on the website ' www.mclaren4sale.com ' - may have changed ownership in early June.
Supposedly, the new owner is from St. George, UT and his name is Randy Mills. If another story I found on the web is true, Randy Mills owns a racing school in Phoenix, has a Ferrari 250 GT California, and an Elanor from the movie Gone in 60 Seconds. Anyone have more info on this guy or know if that story is legit? >8^) ER |

I don't have an official source on the rumor - I'm sorry.
The other info I posted came from a quick Google search which turned up this thread: http://www.slcstreetracing.com/forum...p?TID=937&PN=1 Could be bogus info - I don't have any reason to doubt my original source though. >8^) ER |

My original source was an email from someone who knows that I would care. He doesn't participate here though, otherwise I suspect he would have posted it himself.

Still For Sale
I must report that the Orange car (as listed at www.mclarenforsale.com) is indeed still for sale. I am not certain what happened with any previous deals or if indeed Randy Mills was serious about the car, but it is still (once again) for sale.
Just an update. I have also recently been informed that the car has been detailed and any necessary work has been completed. I am told that it is quite impressive. It should no longer show the typical wear and tear as it did in the Road & Track article. I mention this only to clarify some question of its condition as perhaps overly exaggerated in some earlier posts. I have seen the car personally 3 or 4 times and was very impressed with the quality and condition of the car despite the miles the car is driven (still very few miles even compared to most exotics, but it is driven). If it would be of more use or merit, I can arrange to personally inspect the car in the present time to make a formal report to verify its condition. Of the McLarens I have come in contact over the years, I have been witness to more than one McLaren who's condition is absolutely appaulling. There are previous owners out there that have not been the most dillegent in maintaining their cars.

I'm aware that there are some things that only an authorized service center can do, and things only the manufacturer can do...but how much maintenance can the owners actually do themselves, and how much of it is things they have other people regularly do? |

Most owners don't maintain the cars themselves. Some do. Some also neglect them completely, which is very bad for some consummable items like bushings or hoses or the rubber bladder in the fuel tank (supposed to be replaced every five years).
That said, there is very little in a McLaren, that can deteriorate so badly that it cannot be undone. The only one that has ever been written off was entirely consumed in a fire. The rest of the production cars, if desired, have always been fully salvaged from crashes or after years of neglect. Those that are still languishing in collections will take effort and money, but will always be able to run to their fullest potential. What is affected by their condition is their selling price. The amount of work and time needed to bring neglected cars back into good shape translates into bills, and in the case of McLarens, very big bills. Unless they own race teams and have the resources needed (some owners do have such resources at their disposal), generally speaking, the private owners don't have access to the blueprints needed to machine specialized parts, or the diagnostic equipment for full engine rebuilds, or the jigs and materials for major body repair and paintwork. Those are jobs that are done at McLaren headquarters and authorized service centers only. So the cars need to be shipped to them for such work. Virtually everything else can be done by owners or private mechanics. Parts might have to be purchased from OEMs or McLarens, but the work can be done in-house. McLaren also provides assistance over the phone. It's a car, just like any other, and can be worked on like any other car. IMO, however, it is more exquisite than any other car. |

Re: Is the
Thanks =)
I was pretty sure there were a few people with the mechanical knowledge to be able to work on their cars. |

Yes, a couple of owners have also gone to McLaren and spent considerable time learning how to work on their cars.
