Electrical Issues/troubleshooting

My wife's 1996 Astro van has a circuit that has a dead short in it. If I try to replace the fuse it blows before I can even get it in. It is the courtesy light/interior light circuit. The other night the lights came on for a breif moment with out a fuse in the circuit.

Any ideas on how I can trouble shoot this??

All bulbs and door switches have been tested.

Thanks
Keith

Well, make sure that the lighter isn't causing it kuz i've noticed that the car's lighter does that often to the fuses of the car. Sometimes, the lighter plugin gets stuck in an on position without the lighter even being in it. This has caused me a box of fuses in the past. When it blew a fuse, the power windows and power locks and sound system stopped functioning. However, it depends from one car to another to see which circuits are connected to which fuse!

The lighter is not on the same circuit. It only has the vanity lights & interior lights on it. But thanks for the input..

If you can think of a Van I would have to guess it has 12-15 items on this fuse. Lights and switches...

Truely man, my response was a shot in the dark, and the people here couldn't tell you what's wrong with it even if they wanted to. There's just sooo many possibilities. IT COULD BE (AND I COULD BE WRONG SO DON'T YELL AT ME FOR THIS) that your alternater is begining to break down and it's fluctuating in the power production. Usually when my alternater goes bad, my lights start to flicker, sometimes they go brighter, and sometimes they just don't work at all when it's dead. It could be that your alternater is producing too much power or there might be a problem with the car's Control Grid or something like that. It's like a chip or something that controls most of the electric functions of the car. I would get it checked out so that it doesn't bring you a fine for the lights going out at night or cause you an accident or something. :S *You'd need to test the ECU for error codes*

Do you have a hookup for trailer lights? Check for shorts...

Well I've heard of people with lights that just turned off and on at random times and other weird shit like that. I've actually seen my friends car do some crazy shit. Its lights would open and close for no reason at all :S. Alot of them ended up replacing some chip in their car. Just remember to check the output of the alternater if you have *THE THING THAT CHECKS CURRENT AND VOLTAGE THAT I THINK ARE CALLED* a multimeter or a voltmeter.
