timing belt changes

Hi,

I have a 1988 Accord with 219,000 miles. The timing belt was last changed at 161,000 (in August 1999). I know the timing belt should be replaced after the first 90,000 miles, but then should it be every 60,000 miles thereafter or every 90,000 miles? I've asked this question of several mechanics - both independent mechanics and Honda mechanics, and gotten different answers.

Also, for a 1995 Accord, how often should the timing belt be replaced after the first 90,000 miles?

It doesn't say in your manuals? Email a Honda rep or someone like that. I'm sure it would depend on the quality of the belt too...there are some that are considered aftermarket that last longer. Those manufacturers would probably have their own specs on it.

I've always heard to change it every 70k. I'm not sure though....look deeper into this post because someone asked the question about a month ago and there were several replies...good luck!!

The 95 should have it replaced every 90,000. I don't know why someone told you it needs to be replaced every 60,000 miles.

The timing belt on the 88 Accords is large by standards and doesn't need replacing until 90k. They have large teeth and last forever. Unless you run the car without oil or something like that and force it to jump time, which is incredibly hard to do. You shouldn't have any problems with your belt. Look at your water pump and tstat at 90k as well. Don't let them sell you work and parts that you don't need. Good Luck.

Some are 60K, 90K, & 105K - I dont remember which is for what year. Only Honda t/belts should be used.
CHANGE the water pump when replacing the timing belt - cost for the water pump is only about $45 additional to the timing belt job. Water pump only is what 2.5-3.0hrs of labor + parts Most likely if your replacing the water pump other than with the timing belt is because the pump was leaking. What do you think happens when it leaks? It soaks the timing belt with coolant & it need replacing - its your choice. the $45 for the pump is well worth it, also a good time to replace the drive belts.

I JUST had my 90k Timing done a little under a month ago at my mechanic's. I paid $495- All belts and water pump.

expensive bit of mantainence.....a pain in the rear to do you yourself. If your money short, do it yourself....if you have little time, or you just don't have the patients...bite the bullet and get it done at a shop. Seriously, every 90,000 miles it should be replaced....I'm the paranoid type who would say 70-80,000....but only because I build motors as a hobby and those motors are expensive ;o)

you're supposed to change it every 90K. If you want to be on the safe side, im sure you could do every 60K...
