shuddering steering column when braking
1991 Suburban - steering column shudders when braking. I know about warped rotors (earlier posts and my mechanic) - had them turned 1 year ago - took care of problem temporarily. Shuddering is back, and mech. says I will need new rotors next time I replace front pads, which have 60-70% left on them.
1) What is the underlying cause of warping - won't the new rotors warp within months if the turned ones did? Is it wheel misalignment (hitting curb when parking, etc.). 2) Is it best to coincide new pads/rotors w/ new tires and wheel alignment to help solve future recurrance? We have a trip to East Coast in 1 week (4000 mi. RT) - trying to decide whether or not to replace now. Thank you! DCG

Heat, high water, too thin rotors will all cause this problem.

I have a 95 burban and that happens all the time. Us lucky pre-99 guys (when chevy decided to ditch the rear drums) all share that problem. It's just the hard conclusion that i've had to come to grips with. If you drive semi-aggressively (as you have to do here in so. cal) and/or are forced to slam on the brakes from 65/70 mph on the freeway, you can pretty much expect to be going through rotors quick-style.
Did I mention I also tow a 25 foot ski boat? Well...let's just say that if the trailer didn't have abs on all four tires, i'd be broke from replacing those rotors we were so graciously blessed with.
