Need help on tuning and souping up my car!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got a 96 sebring with the stock engine in it. I'm looking to really soup up my engine or just to get another engine altogether. I don't even know where to start though when it comes to souping up my engine, i don't want NOS or anything like that I just want an engine that is fast off the line meaning i want fast accleration, I heard there is a computer chip you can get but i'm not sure about it. What other performance enhancing parts would ya'll suggest. I'm really looking for some suggestions because I don't have the slightest clue.
