How Honest Are you ?

How honest are you ?

I ask this because years ago i was standing in a line waiting to go to this race meeting when we saw this bloke drop his wallet. Now being the little arsehole i was back then we all said nothing.
We picked up his wallet which had $210.00 in it and took the lot with out saying a word.
We could have given it back but we didn't.
To this day i still feel really stink about it as i was always brought up to be honest.
It happen to me again last night at work when we where waiting at McDonalds, but this time i gave it back to the guy who dropped it. My work mate i was with nearly knocked my block off for giving it back.

I feel abit better now.....as i look back on what i done, and hate myself for it. I'd hate it to happen to me.
I beleive in being honest to all people as you never know when it will catch you out.

So.......what would you all do??

I like to think that I'm very honest. I couldn't live with myself if I did something like that. I'm a firm believer in the saying: "what goes around, comes around".

If I find something, I try to make an effort to get it back to the rightful owner. A few years ago I found a guy's organizer (little notebook/wallet). It was at a mall. It had all his credit cards, ID, checkbook and $600 cash. I got his phone # off his checks and called his house and left a message on his answering machine with my cell phone #. My phone never rang. He was running around the place looking for his organizer and happened to see me passing by with it under my arm. I made him tell me what some of the stuff was in there so that I wouldn't give it to the wrong person. He offered me some of the cash but I declined, and told him to pay me back by doing the same if he found someone else's stuff.

Well done both of you. I have handed in peoples wallets before, and have also had mine returned to me, I definitely think its better to be honest.

Interestingly, I went to a cafe last Sunday with a friend and had about 4 drinks. We then decided to leave, and I got about 100 meters down the road when I realised I hadn't paid. I wasn't quite sure what to do.....but I went back and paid for my drinks anyway. What would you guys have done? Im still not sure....coulda got some free drinks!

In a weaker moment I dropped a 6 pack of beer at the wholesaler the other day, the tops popped off two bottles and the beer fizzed out all over the floor. However, no one saw me do it so I calmy grabbed another six pack, went to the counter and paid for it, then walked out.

i'd give back somebodies wallet, i don't need to steal money. If somebody is really poor and has trouble living then i could see why they wouldn't return it

but other things like if i didn't pay for drinks, i wouldn't haul my ass all the way back to the place and pay. I don't care if corporations or companies loose money, they have enough. If somebody gives me the wrong change i'm not gunna go and give it back, that's their fault and i'm not gunna go out of my way to bring it back. but if it's from somebodies own pocket then i'll give it back... i just don't care if it's from a store, business, etc.

If somebody dropped their wallet, I'd give it back. If they dropped a bill, I'd take it. :o

When it comes to the things that have been previously discussed, I am extremely honest. I have made mistakes in the past. I'm not perfect by any means. However, the most recent 'test' of honesty would have to be something that occured this past spring. I was on a quick trip to the store with a friend of mine. I had been looking at a magazine when my friend asked for my help in making a decision on something. Without thinking, I tucked the magazine under my arm as I went to help her. I forgot about it and actually left the store with the magazine still under my arm. Halfway to the car I realized that I still had it. My friend urged me to go ahead and just leave, but I had to turn around and pay for it. There was just no way I could walk away with it.

I think my biggest problem with honesty is talking openly with another person. When it comes to being honest about how I feel, or what I'm thinking, I have a difficult time being open and honest about that. But there's always room for improvement.

I have turned in people's wallets before. Infact, in one study, Pittsburgh PA was one of the most honest cities when it comes to that kind of stuff!!! But when I found a $20 on a soccer field, I kept it since no one was around.

As for the drinks or magazine... I really don't know what I would do! I know that's bad, but I am guessing that I'd go back and pay in the end...

I turned in a wallet (Actually a backpack of stuff that was reported stolen) I'm totally honest, I couldn't steal anytihng my concocine goes against it (I'd actually only steal if it involved lots of planning and cunning, fallen wallets aren't exactly a challenge if you know what I mean)

honesty is both my greatest plus and minus. On the plus side, I'm so honest that all people have to do is tell me not to tell anyone and then they tell me all kinds of things I wish I never heard. Therefore people allways believe me (except my dad, can't figure that one out...) on the minus side though, I take it for granted sometimes that others are the same way, and as a result I am extreemly gullible and fall for many gags. It's a two sided coin. On the bit about giving back the wallet, a definite yes, on the driving back to the store to pay for a couple drinks, I am too lazy to do that, I would just make it up next time I go there.

I think after what happened to me it did teach me a good lession about being honest.

I've had the cases as well where shops have forgotten to charge me for things and i've gone back to tell them. Just makes ya feel honest about yourself.

I think I am an honest person. Several times in my life I've seen someone drop money, credit card ect and not realize it. Each time I would get there attention to pick it up or grab it hand catch up with them so I could hand it over. To be honest (literally) taking it never crossed my mind.

Its somewhat disappointing to hear that you did that, but it was extremely good to hear that you regret the incident and dont have plans to repeat it. You've matured since then and are taking responsibility for your actions. Thats the mark of good character.

Im honest, i could never steal. I got enough money for just about anything i want. Also my dad will usually buy/split the cost of other more expensive things if i asked him to, so i have no reason to steal.
