truck sputters

I'm an idiot when it comes to fixin vehicles, so I thought I might ask some of you guys what you think of my situation before I go spend hard cash on a diagnostic test.
My truck seems to shake a bit when i start up and it shakes quite a bit when I hit 40mph at the the gear change I believe. It is automatic and I did have the transmission worked on a month ago or so. I do have an odor that to me smells like gas or something maybe burnt not sure. It seems to shake only when I give it gas and I am getting poor gas mileage. If anyone has any ideas as to what this might be, so I can check it myself I would appreciate it. Thanx

hey,

Check out your timing, it sounds like the engine is misfiring because of timing, also check your plugs, faulty plugs will do the same. Dodge's have a problem with engine timing so I'd bet that is the problem.
