PLEASE HELP ME I AM DESPRITE :( !!!!!!!!!!!

my name is danielle, i have a 1991 plymouth laser 2.0 non-turbo standard. today i broke down on the side of the road. i needed my car towed to a shop. the mechanic says it is the cam shaft sensor (i was told it is also a crank shaft sensor). i have called around for prices and the lowest i have gotten is 393.00 the highest i have gotten is 850.00. first off do these prices sound right (sorry i am a female... dont know much about cars ). this is what happened. i was at a red light, i went to take off, i put the car in second gear, it bucked then the check engine light came on then it died(all took place in about 30 sec.). would a cam shaft sensor do that?? if anyone can help please do, i need it. THANKS ALOT!!!!
