Question P10 & KYB GR2's - Opinions?

hi,

have an all stock '96 g20, and the ride's getting pretty harsh - it feels like there's nothing btw my rear and the road!

am thinking about kyb gr2's, since I was quoted ~$800 by an Infin. dealer to replace all 4 shocks/struts. anyone have experience with the gr2 + stock springs? specifically, if you can:

1. do gr2's + stock spring combo work and how much were they?
2. how soft/firm they are compared to stock

I'd also like to confirm part numbers (Front/341120, Rear/235061/2) and that this is all I'll need. I can't do the work myself, so I'll have a shop do it....

thanks a lot!

KYB

Good struts, but you might consider doing both springs/struts at the same time while everything is out. Also that price quote is pretty spendy.

ah!

oops, sorry! that was $800 for O.E. replacements. I figure the gr2's will be cheaper?

what would be a cheap (but decent) spring replacement? I'm not really looking to lower it - just want a good handling (pref. better than stock) and comfy ride.

Well i'm relatively new to the communittee, as you can see by my # of posts, but i guess hopefully you guys can help me understand more about the G20/Primera. I've done a lot of hw and really read up on the G20/Primera with the SR20DE engine. I've read a lot about our car, and basically figured out my plan of modding up my car. However, one of the less covered on subjects seems to be the already complicated and solid supension of the G20. I've got my performance mods all handled that include a CAI, Greddy exhaust, and JWT performance chip. Maybe a few more, but cams i dont really know too much about. However i really want to get some handling mods also and the ground control kit looks nice, but do i want to mix ground control springs with different shocks? Does Gab make shocks for our car? Can someone please elaborate on the springs/shocks for the G20. What kind of options do i have? Budget is a small problem for me, but i try to get products which are the best quality even if that means sacrificing other mods. Please however, try to give me a estimate on cost. THANKS

By the way my ride is 95 P10 model G20t. ALL STOCK, but soon hoping to reach a goal of 130-140 REAL hp, with some serious aesthetics and handling

allstock,
something does not "compute" here. Usually when shocks give-up the ride does not become harsh. It becomes soft, wobbly, floaty, loose, etc. Harsh from aging suspension components would probably mean that your springs have sagged so much (this would be very visible since ride height would have diminished) that you are now bottoming the suspension, something very rare and unlikely.

Assuming that the dampers are the culprit, absolutely go with aftermarket replacements. Nissan struts/shocks are very nice but extremely expensive. For the same price they quoted you, you can get KYB AGXs AND Ground Control Coilovers!!!

Yes they do. They are almost identical in feel/settings to the stock Nissan units. Initially they seem a bit firm but pretty soon (100miles or so) they "turn to stock". You should be able to get them online for $45 to $65 each.

Same.

Take care,

hmm

hey, thanks for all the help. more info...

the car just feels much harsher than it did when it was new. it doesn't look lower than normal, but whenever I hit even small bumps, it feels like the suspension didn't help at all. the car (and me) bounce pretty darn hard.

i could swing the $300 or so for the gr2's and the install at a shop...but not really much more than that. tight budgets, ya know?

Here is a good place to start.

http://www.kyb.com/buy/index.html

You can put in your zipcode and find a retailer near you or go to the upper right handside of the page and check out the online retailers for KYB.

I am running the stock springs and kyb gr2s in my G right now, the ride is pretty much stock, I have some low profile tires running on 16s which makes the ride sighly harsher....and one weird thing is that when i have 3 ppl in the back I rub when i hit bumps.....in any case u should get the gr2s for cheap...like 340 for front and back....

i would recommened KYB AGXs too. they are great, plus they are adjustable. wait are the GR2s adjustable, IIRC, they are not. i got my 4 AGXs for $560, kind of expensive though, but worth the money. check out "groupbuycenter.com" they had a KYB AGX group buy for $365 last time.
