I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L and I am wanting some more horsepower. Right now as of performance mods I have an exhaust and an intake. I was wondering if I put the Venom 400 if it would be worth my money and give me the horses or just mess up or ruin my engine???? I was also wondering if anyone one else has ever put on of these on their sunfire. If not please tell me of other horsepower mods for my sunfire. Thanks,
Dustin |

Re: Venom 400 for a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L???
The 2.2 being the shitty engine it is may not handle that kind of horsepower so be careful. Also if someone claims to increase your HP by 25% read it and make sure its like a guaranteed hp increase not up to 25%. Companies lie to sell.

Re: Re: Venom 400 for a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L???
I would have to say the 2.2 L is not a great engine, I purchase one for my wife to go back and forth to work. I took it one time over the speed limit on the highway just for fun, the bearings on the crank spun, and that was it for the engine. I took it back to GM, they put in a new engine, but I don't believe they make these engines like they use to. The car only had 50,000 k on it
Now my wife drives it and I put a little egg under the gas pedal, I tell her if she breaks the egg, she's pushing the car to hard ... The only reason I purchased this car was because I liked Pontiac from the beginning, I have a Pontiac 1967 Beaumont all restored and its one of the best cars I have today, but they don't make em like that anymore. I also have two Honda Accords and I must say you can kick those cars into the ground and they'll just get up and take it some more. My one Honda Accord has 400, 000 k's on it and it does not burn a drop of oil. My other Accord has 360, 000 k's on it and it does not burn oil at all, but it does not run as good (it could be the fact that I ran it through the back hills as an enduro to much) but never less it still runs and works as a spare car in a jam. I never maintained it very much just oil change. Short answer long, I would not recommend pushing the 2.2 L anymore then you have to. My experience with them has not been great

Re: Venom 400 for a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L???
hey swamps interesting you should say not to push the 2.2l up too much,, since i regularly " push it" up and beyond the speed limit( ok so speeding on highways is illegal DUH) and i do have a cold air intake and i do happen to have the venom 400. I saw it online a few weeks back, not that i needed the extra horses but torque is always a good thing to have. I never have had crank or bearing problems like you mentioned.and yes it is an auto so f***ing what? i guess you could call mine a sleeper-- looks stock, except for the tint, but underneath that hood lies a potent 8cyl killer, 0-60 in 5.8 etc but this isnt bragging rights. this is about another sunfire hater posting when he isnt wanted. so get lost kiddie and go suck on mommas nip

I was just explaining what problems I had with my 2.2 L, I have a couple of Honda Accords as well and they have been great both of them, I have almost 400,000 ks on one of them, with no real big issues. I also have a restored Pontiac Muscle car, which has been great in all areas as well, that is the real reason why I decided to go with GM. Other then that there excellent on gas mileage great every day driver kind of car, great for my wife . Since GM replaced the whole engine, I have had no problems with it.
+++ but underneath that hood lies a potent 8cyl killer, 0-60 in 5.8 etc but this isnt bragging rights. +++ Don’t really believe this but if you want state where you live, and I’ll come see for myself if you live in my area of course? +++this is about another sunfire hater posting when he isnt wanted+++ No its not I was just explaining my experience that I had just because you don't like it doesn't mean anything to me and I’ll always like Pontiac they have made some great cars.

Re: Venom 400 for a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L???
The only car that I have modified is my 1967 Pontiac Beaumont, Its pushing about between 250 and 300 hp not sure, always adding as the years go by, long project. Ask kamarokiller he sounds like he's done a lot of mods to his sunfire.

I have a '98 2.2L sunfire and I push it all the time and the only big problem I've ever had is the suspension on the rear end crapping out but that has nothing to do with pushing the engine over speedlimits. Since then its only been little problems like the radio/clock light burning out and the highbeam wire shorting out. Maybe I should go a bit more easier on my baby...

2.2L = POS
2.4L = OK ECOTEC = better but not great (upgradeable anyways)

Re: Venom 400 for a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L???
I'm a current sunfire owner and an old gearhead. If you are going to boost horsepower of any engine beyond its design limits there are a number of things you should do. This also counts to anyone driving their car hard.
First, break in. Break it in the way you intend to drive it. A "grocery getter" will come apart if driven hard. The wear pattern between small bblocks of an old grocery getter and a small block in a high perf car are significantly different. Second, if you have some miles on your car, look into dropping the pan and replacing the main bearings, also replace the cam bearings. Take a good look at the piston rings. I understand the venom is just a control module, but you also have to think about the stress on moving parts the added fuel and air are going to put on the pistons, rods, and bearings. Example, More than a few years ago, I bought a 1976 cutlass S, built and dropped in an olds 455..here's the parts to the motor. Keith Black Forged nitrous pistons with dropped ringlands, Balanced forged crank and rods, Block was shotpeened for stress relief, all new freeze plugs and pipe plugs before assembly. Mondelo racing heads, mondelo cam, mondelo intake. Dual eidelbrock quadrajets. 150 hps wet shot of Nitrous oxide Off the bottle, 675 hp at the crank on dyno.. Full steel car, low 10s in the quarter at 150 mph. Car still runs today, same engine, no rebuild and still drag raced by its current owner. Its all about how strong the moving parts are. Take the time to replace the bearings, do proper break-ins. New high volume oil pumps etc to avoid catastrophic failure. Tmonroe |
