Clearcoating question?

I used search but nothing came up that really answered my question. I'm a little confused on when clearcoating should be used. I'm planning on building a Tamiya Subaru WRC 2001 model which has a large # of decals and I'm wondering if I should clearcoat over the decals to protect them, because on all of my other models the decals just scratch right off!!

Yes, whenever I use decals, I clearcoat over them. But I have had some decals turn a funny yellow so do a test. HAHAHA, thats funny your from Buque, NM to.

dont use dupli color or any else laquer based clear coat to cover decals... they eat the decals away.

Clearcoat will protect the decals as well as making ur model shine.

Will Tamiya's clear work fine? I've also read about other things like "Future", "Kleer"and "TopFlite LustreKote"?

They don't "eat" decals, but they made an horrible job

Use Tamiya or Testor clear (testor #1814 ONLY)

Strange i have used dupli color clear top coat over decals before on some thing like 20 models and i have never run into any troubles regardless of of whom the model maker was.

Try using Testors enamel clear coat, sumone i knew used Tamiya lacquer clear coat and it melted the paint off...

Im just in the mids of painting my focus and i used tamiya metalic gold and now i am clear coating with tamiya clear and its working fine!

the reason Tamiya clear coat ate the paint off was probably because he had use a non-lacquer paint color under the Tamiya lacquer clear. people need to be careful about paint compatibility.

You will also avoid many problems if you think to put a few "light mist" coats before the "wet coats". So you protect your paint and decals from any nasty thinner in the clear coat.

Yes yes, first 2 coats from long distance to protect the decals from the wet ones, this way the clear reach almost dry, and dont harm the decals, also, to be more sure, you can varnish the decals with tamiya ACRILYC clear with an airbrush to protect them more, but you still have to be carefull with the clear, this way you only have more protection, but no 100%!!!

I did use testor clear if I need to spray over decals.. but only #1814. other clear are crap
