Unhappy Billions of scratches

Hey guys.

I've got quite a few scratches on my trunk (and generally distributed through the whole car). The previous owner had the car in their garage an a ton of shit on top of it (hadn't used it for about 2 years).

I used some 3M Rubbing compound (by hand) and it didn't do that much. Is there some trick to using this stuff, or there's something better available?

If you can feel the scratches with your finger nail or they are deeper than the color coat, rubbing compound wont do a thing. In this case you must sand & repaint.
Now if they are just light scratches in the clear or color coat, they can be removed. High-speed buffing is the only way to go, working by hand will do little. You will also remove the clear coat in the process, jepordizing the paint finish.

If you dont have high-speed buffing experience, dont try it for the 1st time on your car. High-speed buffing takes talant & practice.

maybe meguiars swirl remover, wax does NOT remove scratches. Waxing only protects the finish.

LoL... I didn't mean to put down your expertise in any way. What I meant by "Especially if its right before I screw it up." is that the advice is very much appreciated since I was just about to screw it all up.
