Driveaxles Wont Budge!

Hi,

I am having a big problem getting the Axles loose.
I took off the wheel and got a 32 mm socket with a breaker bar that fit perfectly on the axle socket. I put a bar between 2 of the hubs and turned the breaker bar. It wont budge at all even with a extension steel pipe over the breaker bar.
I even had someone stand on the brakes and it still wont go.
BTW, I am doin the left front one.

Well when I did it, it took a lot of torque...just keep at it man, its going to bust loose. Thats where air tools come in really handy, but if you dont have them, get a longer extension on that bar of yours, the only way to get it when theyre tight like that and doing it without air tools is to give it hell man. Get the fattest guy you know and tell him to go at it. Sorry cant help more man, get a hook up at a shop and they will do you wonders. Ive been working at one for a while, and air tools are heaven. Absolutely the best invention. Check into renting some or see if anyone has anything like that around that will let you use for a while.

Ok,

I read somewhere that ur supposed to enable the bolt to loosen by using a screwdriver and unclipping it.

I think its a cruchnut, and yeah, it would make it easier if you released the crushnut by moving the crushed part back out, and that should help a bit

Can u better explain to me what it means by releasing the bolt?
I've read it in the repair manual and it doesnt give u a good description.
What tools will I use? How will I know it is released?

Yeah the spindle has a groove in it that the outermost part of the nut is bent into. Use a flat head screwdriver to pry it out then try.

yup, exactly, the nut has a part that has been crushed in on itself so it locks into place, to insure that it doesnt loosen. Take a flathead screwdriver, pry that part of the nut out so it "releases" and then try it

First of all you do this with the wheel still on the ground so that the car can't roll. Second look at the axle nut, you might see a part of it is smashed in, that is to prevent it from coming off when you are driving. You need to pry that dent out with a screwdriver. Then try it...

ok,

I tried doin that and the screwdriver wont pry it back.
Should I use a bigger screwdriver?
Maybe one thats strong enough?
I have tried using a heavy duty pipe over my breaker bar it it bends it!

I am still having no success with this axel removal method.
Is there any other way I could do it that may loosen it up better like maybe by the tranny then I could better loosen the axel bolt?
does it make a different if I do the left front or right front axle first?
Another stupid question but is it possible to just take out one axle that at the right front and closest to the tranny out and not take the other one out? Can I still get the engine out?
This is really stressing me out cause I have no car and I miss driving it.

There is an Integra at the junkyard with no engine yet the axles are still hanging out of it. So while it can be done and get the engine out, getting it in would be a bitch and a half.

You need air tools man, seriously, it's the only way to do it.

i did mine with a breaker bar and a 1 foot leverage pipe. i just stood on teh breaker bar and jumped up and down. oh and btw, if you remove the lower balljoint, you can pull the hub assembly out far enough to remove the axles from teh transmission, it only takes a straight screwdriver. they should pop right out. you wont even have to remove the axles from teh hubs if you are reusing the axles on a new engine.

yea,

All I want is to disconnect the axels from the tranny because I am puling the engine out and swapping in a SI D16A. I am keeping the axles cause I think they were replaced not too long ago by a previous owner.
So your saying if I just disconnect both lower ball joints the axle will pop out from the tranny? That means I wont have to try to loosen up the axel bolt?

Uncrush the nut.
Squirt some WD-40 or penetrating oil onto the threads.
Get a long-ass cheater pipe. I once got a 10-foot long pipe, and dangled from the end of it like a monkey, yanking, until that sucker popped loose.
At which point, I nearly brained myself with the cheater pipe. Get a friend with a video camera to stand on the sidelines.
It WILL respond! Now, kick some ass!

PS-Having said that, last time they were stuck I drove down to a professional mechanic with air tools, and wrrt! wrrtt! they were broke loose in literally 2 seconds.
