Servicing the inside air filter

Greetings,
I serviced (cleaned) the inside air filter on my '02 I35 today. In case you din't know it, you have to REMOVE the glove box to get at the filter element. Six screws hold the glove box in place. It comes out pretty easy. If you have back problems have a friend get in there and do the bending around etc. I found it helpful to remove the plastic trim piece on the passenger side, by the sill. The sticker in the glove box says you can "wash" the element with soapy water, let it dry and put it back in. I cleaned it by using a vacuum cleaner and banging the element on the ground so all the small stuff falls out. I'll buy a new element and have it on hand so I can replace the old one next time I service it. My car has 11,900 miles on it. The filter was in pretty good shape and it clean up okay. I got in between each of the pleats with a narrow vacuum attachment. I also took photos as I worked. I can't post them with this email but if anyone is interested I'll forward them as requested. You should have a cable or DSL modem if you request the photos. They are about 500K in size, per photo, so a dail-up modem will take a while to down load.

Inside Air Filter

Hello 2000I30CG,
The air filter located behind the glove box is used to filter the air that comes into the vehicle. It's a nice touch and prevents stuff from getting into the car's cabin. No more pollen or small leaves etc. when you fire up the ventilation. I'll forward some photos shortly.
Regards,
Shortimer

Expensive

Greetings,
I went to my local Nissan dealer today and priced the interior air filter, the one mounted behind the glove box. (The Maxima and I30, I35 share some parts so I went there first looking for the part.) The parts guy quoted a price of $47 for the element! That price included a small discount given to mechanics. I thanked the guy for his time and left.
I'll try the Infiniti dealer next time I'm out that way. Unless the parts are different, i.e. the Nissan part is NOT the correct element, I don't expect there to be much of a price difference. The Nissan parts guy said the filter element has charcoal or a special carbon element that was part of the filter. My element looked like some kind of paper material. I'll post any new info on this expensive little item once I get it.
Regards,
Shorttimer

That's gotta hurt

Hey there 200i30cg,
That's gotta hurt to see the car like that. Sorry for your bad luck. I hope no one was injured. I'll keep an eye out for the "all better" photos.
Regards,
Shortimer
P.S. Glad you liked the photos of the interior air filter servicing.
