Idiots get what they deserve

I wasn't sure if this should be in the current affairs forum, but this is an annual show of stupidity that I felt would be better served here. Perpetual Darwin award participants, all.

An Australian plumber gored during the annual running of the bulls festival in Spain was in good spirits and recovering in hospital, his mother said today.

Nick Headlam, 29, of Hobart, Tasmania, was gashed across the chest when he was charged by a bull during the second day of the San Fermin festival in the Spanish town of Pamplona.

Two American men were also gored after two of the six fighting bulls, running with six steers, broke from the pack early in yesterday's 825 metre run.

None of the three had life-threatening injuries, the news agency Efe said.

One of the gored Americans, veteran Pamplona runner Al Chesson, 57, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, spent a terrifying half-minute being thrown around and jabbed by a hulking black beast in the narrow alley leading into the bullring that marks the end of the run.

"It was like King Kong tossing coins," the fit, former US Marine and marathon runner said in the hospital, lying in blood-stained sheets as he awaited surgery.

The bull jabbed Chesson so many times he said he lost track of the wounds but he described the horns as mercifully sharp.

"It was like a knife going through butter," he told The Associated Press.

"It didn't even hurt."

Nick's mother Margaret Headlam said she first discovered he had been injured when she received a phone call from a Melbourne newspaper last night.

"Yesterday was fairly traumatic because I didn't know how to get in touch with him," she said.

But she said Nick's girlfriend in Melbourne eventually made contact with him at a Spanish hospital.

"I spoke to Nick this morning," Mrs Headlam said.

"He seems in good spirits.

"He has 20 stitches and he is still in hospital."

She said Nick, a keen surfer and snowboarder, left Hobart last September for a year-long overseas working holiday.

His younger brother Christopher ran with the bulls a few years ago.

"My third son did it a couple of years ago, but came back unscathed," she said.

"He (Nick) is booked to come back in August, but he doesn't know if he will come back earlier or later."

Christopher, who works on the family farm in Tasmania's southern midlands, told ABC Radio his brother was the adventurous type.

"He always tries to do things that are pretty out there," he said.

"He's okay now ... I've talked to him.

"He said he was fairly scared at first and, yeah, he's quite casual about it now, but I think there would have been a moment there where he thought it could have been a bit worse than what it is."

Made famous by Ernest Hemingway in his 1920s novel The Sun also Rises, the event has become a magnet for thrill-seekers from around the world.

Thirteen people have been killed since 1900 and hundreds have been injured.
