UK Government is trying to appeal to the population

BBC NEWS - £6bn which is about $9bn to be spent on roads

The Government after its latest round of battering from other MPs Media and the General public are yet again trying to get into good favour with its citizens.

You can't say otherwise either because two fat JAGS prescott (John Prescott) said in 1999 that he wanted to get most car users off the road and on to trains because of congestion. Needless to say this hasn't work and the Bus Lanes that have been painted all over the place have caused more congestion.

Rail and Bus Fares go up and up all the time. 4 years ago it cost 60p to use the Bus. Today it costs 1.20. Rail Fares descriminate against people going to work because it costs almost double during peak times than of peak times and even then people experience a large amount of overcrowding.

'No big deal'

The AA's John Dawson said the expansion was "just a fraction of what is routine in France and Germany".

"If we want a world-class system we have got to invest in our roads and public transport just as they do, and not make such a big deal about a routine programme."

Geoff Dossetter, of the Freight Transport Association, said it was a belated step in the right direction.

"The government's initial policy of putting a moratorium on all road-building was completely wrong.

"They have come to recognise the error of those ways and they are looking to compensate and to improve the overall quality of the transport infrastructure, notably the road infrastructure."

I agree with this statement 100% if you have experienced the English Rail system you will know that it is Messy and slow. No proper rebuilding has been done and the Rail operators warn that to maintain the tracks that rail prices will have to go up.

To be honest that seems to be the same here aswell. The Irish Government are trying to force drivers off the road but not putting a proper Public Transport system into place. Example being. There is a railtrack (DART- Dublin Area Rapid Transit) that runs the East cost of Dublin from North to South and has been running for over a decade now. And it is quite a succesful rail line BUT it is only of any use to the people living near the line. So the Goverenments solution is to develop a new tram system (LUAS) that will run partially north and south of the city and out to the west of the city but again this is only of any use to the people near the line. And also the two rail systems cant cross over.

So in effect the Governement has caused more traffic congestion within Dublin city centre and suburbs for what amounts to a small number of people to benefit. The obvious solution would have been to expand the DART and put it under ground so that less people would be effected on a daily basis and more people would benefit from the outcome of the development. But no thats to sensible.

Another example, due to rising house prices in Dublin I have had to move outside of my beloved county with my my Fiance to a place called Drogheda about 25 miles north of Dublin. Two weeks ago a new motorway opened running from Dublin airport to Dundalk which is about 18 miles north of Drogheda. This motorway will eventually terminate in Belfast. Thats brilliant I hear you say, no its not because 10 minutes from my home I have to pay €1.50 for the privilege of using the motorway that my motor tax has already paid for. This motorway was to help get traffic out of Drogheda which is a bottle neck but this simply hasnt worked because of the toll. Again the government dressed it up in such a way to make the general commuter feel that there was an alternative, but in effect there is not becasue you have to pay for it.

The Irish government have been condemned many times for their tolling of motorway roads that are developed for the relief of traffic from urban areas. Instead all they have done is move the jams onto motorways instead.

Until such times as any government can provide the public with a reliable inexpensive way to travel and leave there cars at home no development is going to work

I think its absurd that they expect us to pay to use the motorway. There's no alternative. If they do do this sort of rubbish in England most people will be driving down B roads then Expansion would then become a waste of time. I HATE THIS GOVERNMENT.

LABOUR NEEDS TO LEAVE NOW and if the conservative's don't get rid of it. I'm leaving the country as soon as i finish University. Yes i know where i used to live in Plano TX they had Tollways but they had normal Freeways too so you had an alternative to paying only 50 cents. Whereas England you bet your ass its going to be around 2 pounds.
