Golfs can come with the 1.9L TDI (diesel) that makes 90hp, but not the 1.8T found in the GTIs (making 150, now up to 180)

The 1.8T that comes in the Golf's is the exact same ones that are in GTI's. That being said, the only 1.8T's that come in Golf's are the pre-'02 ones. Which are the 150hp ones.

Yeah, 2002 is when they introduced the 180hp 1.8T (AWP engine code). At that point they started putting that engine in the Jettas, GTI's and Turbo S Beetles.

a 2002 is still an mk4 right??

and what is the price difference in a 2000 gti 1.8t and a 2002 gti 1.8t

i would rather want to start with 180hp instead of 150

Yep, '02 is still MKIV. Although you are starting with 180hp on the 02, you don't end up with 30 more hp, as opposed to the 150hp, once you start modding it. Think of the 180hp 1.8T's as a factory tuned 150hp 1.8T. When you chip them both. You end up with right around the same hp (210/215ish). Plus whatever you decide to do after that. Just don't think that you'll end up with 30 more hp, with the same mods on a 180hp 1.8T as you would on a 150hp one. They end up pretty close.

As for the price difference, there's about a $3k difference between an '00 1.8T GTI and an '02 1.8T GTI (around 15-16k vs around 18-19k)

Not entirely correct.
You won't get as much power out of the '00 - early '01 motor as the mid/late '01 - up motor.
The first 1.8t motors had a smaller turbo and didn't have VCT.
When VWoA introduced the new motor in mid/late '01, they did have the K03 sport turbo and VCT but had a more restrictive down pipe.
It wasn't untill '02 they refitted the old down pipe and remapped it to 180hp.

Yes Sir, the golf 1.8t has the exact motor as a GTI. As a matter of fact. The common name for the Golf 1.8t, is Golf GTI. SO all and all its actually the same thing.
