Question Changin Oil filter alone

I just changed my engine oil to a semi synthetic castorl gtx... 2 days ago.
Did not change the filter. I have a Fram extra guard filter which is like 3 k miles old.

I came to know that Fram filter are very bad.

Now, can i just change the oil filter only, with out losing the oil. Is it a real messy job or is it same as chnaging the filter after draining the oil?

the oil filter is above the oil pan? So removing the filter will not cause oil to pour out of the pan? Right

96 taurus GL, 127500 miles, 3.0 V6 Vin U.

thanks

My question to you is why didn't you change your filter in the first place when you changed your oil? You should always change your filter when you change your oil. You can try swapping them real quick, but you will still lose some oil.
