Differences between fluid coupling and torque converter?

What are the differences between the fluid coupling and torque converter? GM's four-speed automatic transmission made in 1939 had fluid coupling and other automatic transmissions have torque converters.

Re: Differences between fluid coupling and torque converter?

The convertor multiplies torque by internally redirecting fluid between the the turbine and the impeller. Plenty of diagrams and info on the net.
