2012 Forester liftghate actuator not unlocking

I have a 2012 Forester that has a problem with the rear gate not unlocking when I use the unlock door button or when I try to use the keyfob. It was working intermittenly a few days ago but I noticed that is would make a clicking noise when I pushed the keyfob button, it sounded like it was locking and unlocking the actautor repeatedly and now it will not work at all. Sure i could climb through the back door and unlock in manually but that is difficult for me a best, any Ideas how to reset the rear liftgate. This is not a power liftgate, the unlock on the keyfob only is supposed to unlock the liftgate.
