Tamiya 1/24 Mercedes 300SL
Hi everyone!
I’m glad to present to you my next model Mercedes 300Sl from Tamiya. I worked hard on that model throughout more than a year. The hardest part was completing the body. I spent a long time choosing the right clear coat and polishing compounds until I was totally satisfied with the result. While doing it the body was repainted 4 times, doors and the hood - 5 times. Also I completely rebuilt the dashboard, added more details in interior and in engine compartment. Besides the kit itself I used detail set by Hobby Design HD02-0315. For body painting were used: Tamiya primer 87064 Tamiya TS-17 Gloss Aluminium Glasurit MS Racing Clear 2k laquer Also during this build were used these paints: TS-29, TS-7, TS-79, TS-80, TS-101, TS-83, AS-2, X-1, X-4, X-7, X-10, X-12 X-26, X-27, XF-59 Molotow liquid chrome Add-ons and custom modifications: Photo-etched Hobby Design HD02-0315 Photo-etched Round Nuts Hobby Design HD02-0135 Top Studio Rivets (D) 0.6 Seatbelt: Hobby Design HD03-0166 + Tuner Model Manufactory Seatbelt cloth light gray Floor covering - MFH Adhesive cloth for seat Hobby design steel tube of different diameters Wires and photoetched clamps of different diameters and manufacturers Enjoy! Re: Tamiya 1/24 Mercedes 300SL
Just wow. Amazingly well done. In 1/24 scale nontheless. I also love the body colour.
May I ask what if you have any "special" technique for applying the colour? As you said, you've done it several times until you were happy. I'm asking since I have a large scale project (1/12) in the pipeline that I want to do in the same colour (using Tamiya TS17). Thank you |

Re: Tamiya 1/24 Mercedes 300SL
The extra detail is cool, the photos are cool too! But why are the doors a different color, it was that planned?

Re: Tamiya 1/24 Mercedes 300SL
Quote:
When you clear coating with 2K clear on TS series paint with Tamiya primer underneath, you can easily have such problem: At the first sight everything looks good, you clear coated the model, let the finish dry for 3 weeks and then polished it. All's good, you assemble the model, make great photoshoot and put it in display case. But after 6-12 months after finishing the model clear coat starts to shrink and once perfectly polished clear coat now looks bad. And the more layers of clear coat you did, the worse it will look. Here's what I did to get rid of this effect: I sprayed very thin coat of 2K clear and let it dry for a month. Afterwards I sanded it with a sandpaper and left it for another month. After that I sprayed final layers of clear coat which were sanded and polished for the final result. And this method really helped - it's already 10 months since I polished the body and I can see no shrinkage of the clear coat at all. The coating looks as perfect as it was right after the polishing. I did a lot of testing with different materials and came to a conclusion that I won't be using Tamiya primer and TS paints for body. The best result in my opinion achieves while using automotive 2K primer and paints. Using them 2K clear won't have any shrinkage at all, and you can be sure that the coating will stay perfect for years |

Re: Tamiya 1/24 Mercedes 300SL
I didn't even see that doors have a bit different color until you wrote about it. Thanks for turning my attention to it! I guess it's because I painted body, doors and hood separately. Next time I will paint them together.
