Tire size question

Currently I have 165/70 R16 size tires on the Quinox.
I know it should have 265/65R16s so my speedo is off by 3 mph.
Anyways, I want to make the car look a bit more aggressive so i was wondering if a 255/65R16 would fit under it without rubbing?

I assume you have a typo and mean you have 265/70/16, and not 165/70/16 because a 165/70/16 would only be about6.5" wide and 25.1" tall, where the 265/70/16 is 10.4" wide and 30.6" tall.

The 265/65/16 you are supposed to have is 10.4" wide and 29.6" tall and the 255/65/16 you are asking about would be 10" wide and 29.1" tall, so it would be shorter and narrower than stock.

To my knowledge, no one has a chart that tells how big a tire will fit under the fenders without rubbing for the literally hundreds of make and models of cars/trucks.

While you didn't tell us what year your Chevy Equinox is, there is a clue in that you have 16" wheels - and Tire Guides says that all Chevy Equinox's took 235/65R16's on 6.5" wheels from 2005 to 2009. Other years used different diameter wheels. Check your door sticker.

A 255/65R16 has a minimum rim width of 7", which means that, if I have this correct, the stock wheels are too narrow for a 255/65R16. Using a rim width that is too narrow tends to make the tire ride in the center, wearing it faster there and tends to make the vehicle follow the ruts in the road and be sensitive to crosswinds.

Yes, you are correct I did mean that the car should have a 265/65R16, thank you for that catch.
It is an 08 Equinox, so, with keeping the 65R16 dimensions in mind, what would be your recommendation on width?

Who the hell came up with these standards? Was it the same people that set the standards for Womens clothing?

I think we should go back to the old way of identifying tire size instead of this aspect ration crap.

Check your sticker on the driver's door frame. That will tell you the original tire size and the specified pressure for that size.

Oh, and tire sizing? You may want to read my write up on tire sizing systems. The old system wasn't as simple as you think it might have been.
