What does a blowoff valve do performance wise?

I just got one, it sounds sweet, but is it gonna help me at all?

A blowoff valve just lets off extra boost pressure. Like if your boost gets too high, it will let some air bypass the engine, prevents knocking. I dont think it does anything for performance, just prevents knocking like i said, someone correct me if im wrong.

i highly suggest NOT putting it on ur motor...well, infact, i doubt u even can. a blow-off valve is something used on turbo'd cars to get rid of the excess (as nimbus said).

take it back to whom u bought it from. or keep it until u are turbo'd...

HAHhahaha, blow off valve on a non-turbo. Is it even possible? Dont you need the turbo
s pressure to be let out through it? Dosnt it release all the air from the turbo after you let off the gas? every time you let off the gas, excess air is forced into the turbo, and the blow off valve releases that air/pressure. so your fans etc in your turbo arnt damaged.

It helps prevent some turbo lag, when you shift it closes off the throttle body which creates tremendous backpressure which is bad for the turbo. A BOV lets out this pressure, otherwise it would send a shockwave backe toward the turbo causing it to slow down incredibly fast-which creates turbo lag when you get back on the gas after you shift.
Help?
