Unhappy Car Emissions

I recently had to bring my saturn sl2 in for emissions test and it failed. Mechanic told me my oxygen sensor and cat. converter were burnt out. I replaced them both and retested. Failed again. Now I either have to scrap it or somehow fix it. Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe adjust the air/fuel ratio and then test it? If so, anyone know where I can find out how to do that on my 1992 Sl2? Any help/advice is appreciated.

I too failed emissions...the first time...miserably. My sl2's idle was extremely high. There were serveral things taht we checked. We were going to replace the oxygen sensor, however, my friend told me that that would be a pretty penny. Instead, we noticed that the coolant sensor went out, replaced that for 14 bucks and some change and passed emissions with flying colors. Perhaps, if you haven't checked that yet (the coolant sensor) try replacing it. It's fairly cheap and if it doesn't work, you're not out that much cash.

Re: Car Emissions

Some other suggestions:

Your coolant temp sensor may be reading to low and require replacement.

Your EGR valve may be stuck partially open and require replacement.
