2008 Silverado fuel smell

Hi all! OK, so I'm just looking for a little advice here. I have a 2008 Silverado with a terrible fuel smell seemingly coming from the front of the box where the gas tank is located. Here's what I DO know. The truck starts fine...not hard starting at all. I have no problems putting gas in the truck. The CEL has not come on, so I'm not getting any codes. I see absolutely no leaks either under the truck or in the engine compartment. Yesterday, on the advise of a friend who used to work at a dealership, I installed a new EVAP Canister Vent Solenoid (the one in front of the fuel tank...not the one under the hood). So basically I'm just looking for a little advice if anyone has had this same thing happen. I'm just not sure what my next plan of attack should be and don't want to start wasting time and money if anyone out there has run into this same issue. Thanks in advance for any replies!!

Re: 2008 Silverado fuel smell

Welcome Aboard!

Since you have already replaced the evap canister, it is presumed that all the vapor and vacuum lines near it and to it were inspected. It may also be advisable to inspect the fuel filler neck all the way to the tank, and the upper vent line from the filler. It might also be good to look at the unit on top of the tank.

If you have access to a scanner (not just a code reader) it may be helpful to read the fuel tank pressure sensor after the vehicle has been running for a while and has stabilized the tank pressure.

Now that it's a little cooler in the UP you may not notice the fuel aroma as much, but I
m guessing the problem has not corrected itself, eh.

Re: 2008 Silverado fuel smell

Thank you for the reply! No, the issue has not corrected itself as of yet My garage definitely smells like a garage!! Yes, I inspected all the lines (as best I can by eye and ear) and everything looks and sounds normal. I did not look on top of the tank, and I did not inspect the fuel filler neck or related vent lines as of yet. I hate to pull the box off or drop the fuel tank as a shot in the dark, but I don't mind doing it if I know that's where the problem is. I pulled off the EVAP purge solenoid and couldn't blow through it (I had read they are "normally" closed until told to open by the computer, so I'm assuming it is ok. I just took the charcoal canister off to see if I could blow air through that and get any dirt out of it. I'm not giving up yet!!
