Question 1996 GMC Jimmy questions

Hi, I am trying to find out some information. I see post below about the service engine light being on. My gas cap is on all the way, the gas station near my work reset everything and it is still on. What should I do? Any suggestions. Also, has anyone ever had to have a transfer case replaced? My truck is making this wierd popping noise, at first just on inclines when I accelerated, but now it is all the time when I first take off. I have taken it somewhere and they said it sounded like the rear u joints but when the guy took it to have it fixed, the man said that wasn't it, that it sounded like the front drive shaft. So, I payed $230.00 to have it rebuilt (i know, i shouldn't have payed), but now that did not fix the problem. So, now we are thinking it could be the transfer case. I am taking it to this guy in the country and he is going to see what he can find out about what the problem is. Does anyone know what the problem could be? How much should I expect to pay if it is the transfer case and it has to be replaced? I am very desperate. In the past month, I have had the air fixed, the front drive shaft and now this. My hubby ask me if I wanted to get new interior while I am at it LOL. Well, let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks,

Kim

First thing is you need to take it back to who ever scanned the computer and have them PULL the code from the computer not just reset it. The gas cap can cause the light to come on but I doubt that was your problem. Have them rescan it and get the code. Also AutoZone will scan the computer for free. Now is the popping sound in the suspention or the engine back firing? If it is the engine backfiring I bet the code that is pulled will help solve that. If it is something in the suspention have all the bushings checked...upper control arm bushing, motor mounts, sway bar bushing..etc.

First, have a reputable technician scan your trouble codes.
Resetting the SES light is not fixing your problem.
The OBD2 system in a 96 model truck will store a fault code and some limited scan data from when the fault occured to help with diagnosing your problem.
Does the SES light flash or stay on steady?
If it flashes, your second problem may be related. You may be experiancing an engine misfire (may be the popping sound you hear). Have you felt a loss of power ?
Unfortunatly I can't diagnos your problem over the internet, but hopefully lead you in the right direction.

Have the ball joints checked. That could be a source of popping. It was on mine.
