*#!#!**!*#...filter!!

I haven't owned my Vw for very long and this is the first one I've ever owned. I planned to change the oil and ordered a filter online for it...(cause I had other stuff coming and in order to get free shipping, I had to spend a certain amount) So I get the filter but it's not the type that is on the car, it's a regular filter, not the cartridge that goes inside. So I buy the cartridge type but am wondering if the other would fit? I would've checked when I got the existing filter off but, it's not coming off, not the standard way anyhow. The plastic nut idea is a terrible one. It was damaged before I messed with it. Tried the 36mm socket, tried with a cheater.... Sand paper inside the filter wrench. Before I nail a screwdriver through it, I thought I'd ask. I even thought to take it somewhere and let somebody else have a crack at it. The car is a 07 Gli 2.0 fsi with around 120,000. Any thoughts?

Wow, seems like a tight lipped bunch around here. I notice a lot of threads like that, lots of people viewing but very few responses. I have a few other concerns regarding my car but I hardly see the use of asking any more questions.
