Lifter???

I just had something go wrong w/ my car last night and i had a friend of mine check it out and he said that it might be a problem with the lifter. I do not know much about engines and i was wondering what exactly a lifter is, and if it is a problem how much somethin like that is to replace.

well what is your car doing? be a little more specific eh... and he is prolly refering to your rocker (our cars don't have lifters) and its part of the valve train, it follows along the cam and opens the valves...

DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYTHING YOUR FRIEND SAYS...

Give more details and we will help, or take it to a shop.

Friends = dumbest people on the planet

Well here's what happened, I was leaving my friends house and right when i fired up my car, there was a slight "tick-tick-tick" noise coming from up in my engine and as i started driving my oil light came on and the "tick-tick-tick" progressively got louder and more often. When i got to the store about a mile or so away i put in a couple quarts of oil and turned my car on and the "tick-tick-tick" was loud and clear, and whenever i revved the car it became louder and quicker. Now its sitting in the garage waiting to be taken to the shop to see whats wrong.

Putting in MORE OIL then recommended is a bad thing! What you want to do is drain all the oil, replace with the proper amount. You need to pickup a GOOD repair manual and a feeler guage... and check your clearances.

first thing i'd do is pull the valve cover and make sure all the valves are adjusted properly...

Feeler gauges and check my clearances??? I dont know anything about under the hood of my car so I think my safest bet is to take it into a shop and see whats goin on because i dont even know what clearances are, lol.

Sorry I just skimmed through the response and probably didnt see the part about a "GOOD" manual. I think i might just end up taking it into the shop because i think my parents will pick up the cost of to see whats wrong. But whatever is wrong i gotta start savin my pennies so i can get my car up on the road.

Try this cause you said the noise got louder so it sounds like a stuck arm. Drain the oil and fill up with 3.5 quarts of 0w-20 and run the enigne at 2000 rpm for 30 min. This uasallly works to unstick the valvetrain. Drain and refill with regaulr oil when done.

I had a guy from a local shop come to my house and he said it was like a lower engine knowck and had something to do with the bearing of an arm, or something internal inside the engine. Could this be right and if so what can u do to fix it???
