'99 silverado temp gauge

When I first start the vehicle, it's obviously at the 100 mark and will gradually move up once it gets warmed up. When it reaches almost (but not on) 210, the needle stops. I've never seen it get fully to the halfway mark on the gauge, it always hangs out just to the left of it. Once it's good an warm it stays at this point and doesn't budge until I turn it off and it goes back down to 100.

Is this normal or is there something wrong? T-stat perhaps? It just seems like any other vehicle I've had, it'll fluctuate a bit more (as will oil pressure).

Sounds great to me- Don't take the readings too seriously- just note what is normal operation, so that when things go awry that you can recognize a true issue. Those dash gauges aren't calibrated and are intended for reference- absolute engine coolant temp can be and should be read with a scan tool- in other words the dash gauge may be off by 15 degrees- reading what looks to be 210 and the 195 degf thermostat be operating correctly.

these temperatures of the coolant will , should not change when @the normal temp... normal temp is 195 deg F .. this is with a scan tool .. gauge is pretty accurate on these. now if it does vary on this/your vehicle then that may mean a leak / air bubbles / head gasket / low coolant .. over the years I did have this coolant temp vary 2X.. this was a bad T stat. coolant temp would drop when at normal temp would not hold @195 F..........

great, thanks guys!! I remember on the k1500 (my profile pic) the oil pressure started getting really low, it wasn't long til it bit the dust. So I'm always trying to pay attention to the gauges!

I have a 2007 Silverado and have a ScanGauge on it. My temp gauge gets to just left of the 210 mark and stays there. The ScanGauge reads about 160 when it reaches that point and I've seen the SG read up to 220 and the gauge doesn't budge.

the scan gauge may be reading another sensor those SG are tricky. I have one that I have programed for my toyota to read the tranny temps toyota has 2 tranny temp sensors one for torque converter other for pan . I had to call up SG to find out which one . I also programed the SG for my truck tranny temp. it works but is tricky to setup. your 2007 may have 2 coolant sensors one for dash one for engine .

I set up my SG to read tranny temp also. Wasn't too difficult, lot of numbers! LOL

Hadn't thought about the dash gauge possibly having a separate sensor.
