For its day the Spirit RT was one mean undercover muther. Why is there no mention of it here?

Ha Ha. Maybe you didn't know but it WAS ONE Bad Muther and here is a link to prove it. http://www.xmission.com/~dempsey/shelby/sheldodc.htm Remember these are 1991 stats not 2001 as they may look like. But you were correct it is an R/T version

Yes, there was an R/T. I owned a white 91 R/T. Those were some REALLY FRIGGING MEAN cars!! I had ALL the options, so it was a PIG, but still. Specs were:
Chrysler 2.2L Turbo III 225HP, 224ft/lbs Inline 4 Cylinder, 16v Dual OverHead Camshaft Head designed by Lotus Turbocharged (Garrett/AiResearch T03) and Intercooled (Blackstone) Front Wheel Drive, 5spd Close-Ratio Getrag A568 Transmission Those things are RARE! 1500 built apparently! I didn't learn this till last year.. and I traded my 91 R/T in on a Ram back in '96. Only got $4k for the trade with 84k on the odometer. Should've kept it.

To put it mildly. That and my 84 Escort GT Turbo. Both long gone, the EGT longer than the Spirit of course. I miss both terribly.
Mine, if I'd kept it, I'd probably have already rebuilt the engine twice - I drive cars, I don't sit on them. I've seen 'em around from time to time, they're usually $2500+ in poor condition or not running. Apparently somebody realized how rare they are. :P

Yeah, but why no Daytona section either? Or maybe a Turbo Dodge section?

I honestly have to say that the Daytona's are being reborn, and are one VERY capable car. They were just ahead of the'r time. More info on Turbo dodges is at www.Team-G-Force.com
I've been a part of that club for going on a year now. we can really do some cool stuff. I have to give the Spirit R/T props. That was an awesome ride. Also, don't forget the Daytona R/T and the Shelby VNT's. Man, if only they woulda made them a few years later.... but now they're cheap to purchase!!

youre all forgetting the most fun of all, the omni GLH and GLH-S.
My buddy if buying a mint 86 turbo GLH for cheap, the owner has no idea what he has, all he knows it was the fully loaded model when he originally bought it back in 86!

And you know what GLH stood for right? Go Like Hell. I think there should be a sub forum for all of us Turbo charged Mopars.
As for the Spirit. I am not a big fan of the Turbo III cars. They are somewhat unreliable and are high maintenance. I heard that they like to snap timing belts. I would much rather have a VNT or the Turbo II. Last edited by Polygon; 07-05-2002 at 04:22 AM. |

You're right about the high maintenance, but stock for stock in it's day it was nearly unbeatable(in its price range anyhow). Thnk, stock vette(non-ZR-1). got it's butt WOOPED! But, you are right about reliability too, but how reliable is a Camaro or Firebird? My old mustang was horrible at reliability. The biggest prob with the TIII was the brass core plugs. change them and keep up maintenance and your home free.

Yeah, GLH also stood for that infomercial product, Great Looking Hair, that spray stuff for guys that are almost bald!!
But yes, Goes Like Hell, and no word of a lie there. Also, I thought all the dodge stuff from the 80's was unreliable. I take it you guys have heard of the hillbilly with the 12sec caravan with the 2.2 turbo?? There is a guy here in Ontario, with a dodge cruck(rampage), Everytime I've seen him run, its consistent 11.4's, as far as i know, the motor is mostly stock. Yes, for back in the day, Not even the big boys could touch those 2.2 turbos. Here is a sad story, there is an immigrant goof in the area with a bone stock red shelby lancer, no rust, very good shape, and he will not get rid of it, he uses it to get to and from work, we've offered him 4grand, and he wont sell it, even offered him a replacement car. yet, he has no clue what the car is and won't part with it. |
