28R detailing video - 2016 Spirit of the Quail winner
I came across this video of 28R and its 138 hour detail in preparation for the Quail this past year. It was the Spirit of the Quail winner.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8s67dmixU8 I never followed-up on where it ended up after the Bonhams sale, but it came out from Switzerland for the event. |

Re: 28R detailing video - 2016 Spirit of the Quail winner
At the Bonhams sale in 2012 it was purchased by a collector living in the USA who sent it to Lanzante for a major overhaul. Then it was sold again within about one year to another US collector who chose to keep it in storage in the UK alongside F1 road car #053 which he had also acquired. Both cars were in the market for a while and I believe the GTR was then acquired by its current owner last summer. He's been actively using it since then for its intended purpose including a couple of track days and an appearance at Goodwood earlier this year. After it appeared in Monterey it went straight back to Europe.

Re: 28R detailing video - 2016 Spirit of the Quail winner
Thanks Erik! Is that "8 figure" sales price mentioned a few times in the video for 28R accurate? I know road cars go for that much, but never heard a GTR sell that high.
I'm surprised at how much it has changed ownership. Any other GTRs change hands as frequently as that this past year? |

Re: 28R detailing video - 2016 Spirit of the Quail winner
I suspect that price or at least that valuation was fairly accurate and yes, the market for F1 GTRs has certainly made some strides since 2012 including for the Longtails. Perhaps you missed it, but Simon Kidston had recently been offering chassis 25R out of Japan with an 8-figure asking price.
![]() I've even been made aware of one GTR transaction that was supposed to have exceeded the $20M USD mark already. Obviously they won't all be at that level, but for the right car in the right condition with the right history, that was the price. As for frequency of transactions that's the only GTR I can really think of that has had that many movements in the past 5 years. Even the majority of road cars have not experienced that much frequency as a lot of people are in them for the long haul now. >8^) ER |

Re: 28R detailing video - 2016 Spirit of the Quail winner
$20 million for a GTR?! I didn't think any GTR would be going for over $20 million outside of 01R. I mean...the 1966 24 Hour winning GT40 P/1046 sold for supposedly $22 million last year. I'm guessing you can't say which GTR otherwise you would've already stated it...

Re: 28R detailing video - 2016 Spirit of the Quail winner
If an F1 LM can sell for a reported $19M, shouldn't the cars that it was built to commemorate - the ones which actually raced and secured the victories, and the ones that truly give meaning to it - be worth similar money?
That's a theory that is starting to gain recognition among major collectors around the world and while it certainly doesn't mean that all the F1 GTRs could command that same price there are some circumstances where one could definitely argue that it is the right price for the right car. ![]() >8^) ER |

Re: 28R detailing video - 2016 Spirit of the Quail winner
I had the $16-18 figure in mind for the LM and I agree that does make sense...at least for the 5 that finished the 1995 24.
The other GTRs I would say not as much if they don't have much of a racing history, but most do. I always wondered why the road cars brought in more than the GTRs in the past. Glad to hear they are going up... Just wish they wouldn't appreciate faster than I can make money so I can have one someday lol! |
