crank walk is the biggest problem that 90% of all dsm owners with eclipse and tsi from 96-99 have it is due to the new 7-bolt motor. the 1g dsm 94 and lower doesnt have this problem because of the 6-bolt motor that those come with.
the only cure for crankwalk if you have a 96+dsm is to replace the bottom end with a 6 bolt motor..

Yes, I've had crankwalk...just had a new block put in....4 or 5 members in my club have had it, one has had it 2x already....
There is a lot of information on people getting this on the web...do a google search or some search engine...just type in crankwalk...and tons of information about it will come up. And don't be fooled...any car can get it....I even have a 1.8 non turbo 1g with it....

Let me help you with that a bit. The 7-bolt motor actually came in the LATE 92 cars (built after April - May) The big problem was that Mitsu started using substandard crankshafts during the 2G model run. The EARLY 7-bolts may be OK , but the 2G one's certainly aren't. I posted the timeline for engine and turbo types in another thread , you may want to consult that...

Another misinformed CW thread. Hard to believe I know...

Like WRX said, the 7 bolts came out in late 92, for 93 model year. Though some 92 are 7 bolt (very rare). The 1g 7 bolts absolutely do CW, as do 6 bolts. 1G cars do NOT use the crank angle sensor like 2Gs do, so there is no easy way to tell you have the CW. On a 2g the crank sensor will die after the trigger plate hits it (that clicking you hear about) so you are forced to look for the problem. 1g can run for years with CW if it stops progressing. Also, very few cars get it. Not even 10% as suggested above, certainly not 90, lmao. Mitsu would have gone out of business from the cost of warranty motor replacements.

Rather than type all this out again, see the writeup I did here:

http://www.racingknowledge.org/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=185

Everyone should read this. Its still pretty simplified, but I hope that it helps.

The 6-bolts can crankwalk? I haven't heard anything about that

any motor can develop crankwalk but the 7 bolt is very prone to it where others are not

You sound surpised? Far fewer DSMs get it than the internet warriors will want you to believe. Its mostly the non DSMers talking it up... Go figure.

And 6 bolts do CW. Leon, the guy that ran 11.8 on the 14b, CWed a couple 6 bolt motors. When I went to pick up his race motor, he had SBR do all of the owrk concerning the oil system just so he would have to touch it. Maybe he thought he was cursed, lol So it does happen, and more often than people think. But way less often than a 7 bolt, and 1g cases arent as disabling as the 2g cases (for the crank sensor reason), so you dont hear about them as often...
