Transmission problems on a 2001 taurus

ok my taurus wont shift drive and is leaking fluid. what could it be?

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of possible answers to your question. More information will be required to give you any sort of realistic answer.

Are you trying to say that your car will not shift out of drive, or it won't shift gears when in drive? Have you checked the transmission fluid level and condition? What color is the fluid that is leaking? Are any of the fluid levels indicating less than full (washer solvent, antifreeze/coolant, power steering, transmission, engine oil)? Do you have a raw fuel smell around the car or under the hood?

it won't go forward,it does have reverse. level/color fluid is good

That's a little different from what usually happens to the older Taurus transmissions. Usually it starts doing things like randomly slipping between gears (feels as if it went into neutral) or starting in second gear and refusing to shift, and it happens disturbingly often. Did it do anything like that before it failed?
There is a chance (cross your fingers) that it's not a transmission problem, but a shifter cable problem. That would be a much cheaper and easier fix so look into that before you do anything as drastic as tearing the transmission apart.

Have you tried shifting down to '2' or '1' to see if it will move forward when manually selecting those gears? Does the engine sound like it's loading at all when a forward gear is selected or does it rev freely like it's in Park or Neutral? If it seems to be loading, make sure the car will roll when in neutral and it's not a situation of a seized brake or stuck parking brake. Parking brakes often hold better from going forward than from rolling backward.

before this sometimes it will take a few seconds to gear on reverse
