Question shifter

my shifter doesn't go all the way to P, engine shuts off normal starts normal also, here is the issue. when I put in reverse i have to put it in N to drive i shift it to 2nd. doing this will this make the transmission slip?
is there A LINKAGE I CAN REPLACE TO CORRECT THIS?
had the trans replaced but it still does the same thing more when i go in reverse trans slipping.
This is for a 1999 mercury mountaineer.
what I mean is when I park, the transmission is in park but the cluster indicator doesn't go to the P, it goes as far as the R (reverse) so when I go in reverse the indicator is in the (N) position to drive the indicator has to be in 2nd.the cluster indicator is off 1.

Re: shifter

I'm not following the issue. The indicator in the instrument cluster won't indicate that it's all the way in Park, or the transmission itself does not engage Park? I don't follow what you mean by or what you are asking with "when I put in reverse i have to put it in N to drive i shift it to 2nd. doing this will this make the transmission slip?"
