Cool Classic Truck : Fiat 682N2 1/24

Dunno really if I should open a wip about this or not.
Hope there is some interest.

This project is (another) long term one, and is about my dream to make a model of one of the most , if not THE most important italian truck Fiat veicoli industriali produced in the 50s.
Fiat veicoli industriali was the truck maker before Iveco, to understand this truck you must figure it out the post war reborn italy, where there was a great volountee of work and do something great for the country (read mostly TO WORK..).
Fiat produced this amazing truck, with no special numbers, but only few essential, perfectly working criteria:
-ALWAYS working in all conditions and all pourpouses
-cheaper to buy than concurrence
-cheaper to fix than concurrence.

The fiat 600 serie was born, and remain in production until 1982 (for export mainly). Its golden age was between 1955/1975. probably overseas friends dunno so much about this, but entire Europe, africa and china absolutely should do.
The 682 and his brother, the following 690 were the big ones of the family, in terms of load and power. All the 600 series were similar in look, just the dimensions and power combinations were different depending from the specs.
Until the early 50s italy went on and on with spare trucks coming from ex-US Army. Excellent machines but hard to fix here for spare parts and dramatically high in fuel consuption, being nearly all benzin ones.

The fellow I want to build is this one:

available in too many different axles combo

and if I will ever be able to complete it, he will be surely NOT glossy shiny and smiling...but rosty and tired, as a workhorse icon.
Those pictures are my inspiration. It seems to feel the ugly (lovely) diesel smell and the old rubber burned by the sun as a dead dynosaur abandoned somewhere....but always working and ready to start at first shoot !

this is the 690, with double steering weel front axle:

last but not least... take a look at this video. The sound of those oldtimer engines remains absolutely mythical forever:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agh9NIGD8SA

isnt he lovely????? :icon16 :

Re: Classic Truck : Fiat 682N2 1/24

so, after this romantic introduction, mostly with the hope to create some interest on this, lets start modelling!
For years I have been after some toys or whatever lookalike to try skip the brutal pure scratchbuild. I knew there have been a small underground production of a resin cabin coming from a toy, but the only time I had it in my hands that was quite pricey and absolutely disappointing. Of course is anyway better than nothing, but maybe I can try my own one. surely longer work.

My main probelm seems the lack of SERIOUS documentation. the maintenance books about trucks seems incredibly rare, even more when the item is so old.
After years of research in forums I end with a decent blueprint of the cabin of the 682, so I start reducing it in scale 1/24

the drawings should be for the early serie of the 82´s with a different rear cabin plate and little higher roof. Have this, will copy this, that for now is the most serious stuff I got..

AFter many trials I found the way to make a sort of photocopy over plastic washing with acetone the back of the paper directly on plastic and placing it under a sharp light for some hours.A sort of photo remain on the plastic and the cutting process began...

of course the front end is the most difficult part, being angled and curved, so lets start from the main lines...

really ugly huh? let me work guys..let me work..

TBC..

Re: Classic Truck : Fiat 682N2 1/24

lets give some shape to the squared parts. all this cabin must be quite rounded. I had no pics of the roof from above, but understood from truck forum this early 682s had 5 reinforcements on the roof.
lets sand it all then.
Plasticad 4mm thick used

Hello,

This remembered me a friend of mine did a full scratch 690 and have bring it at our last show.

I think you have well started your's.
When you talk about 4mm thick, do you use a plastic sheet of 4mm or do you glue several thinner sheets?

I will love that!!

Lolo

Re: Classic Truck : Fiat 682N2 1/24

Wow Lolo !
your friend made exactly my dream truck, it will be too nice to see some more pics of this masterpiece. I love it. make him compliments by myside, this is a very very skilled modeller, and he get completely the tired spirit of the 690 !!

Me for now will probably go for a first 682 T3/4 (tractor), and probably later for another 690 or a different 691 guy. Truck modelling is not my cup usually even if I have periods of falling in love with those big ass guys.
One of my most appreciated models of the past was a rotten fiat iveco turbostar. He won all during 10 years....still save him in my showcase. when they are rusty, old and tired they always get love from the viewer

my 682 is going on..made part of the lower cabin. Now trying to understand the precise dimensions of the wheelbase. little messy with the few documentation I have..

DIMENSIONI e PESI 682 T3
Lunghezza 5677 mm, larghezza 2500 mm, passo 3300 mm, altezza 2660 mm, peso a vuoto
5920 kg, P.T.C. 35000 kg versione a 5 assi.

It means actual size of the wheelbase is 3300, that divided in 24th becomes 137,5 mm... and from my impression the proportions are quite ok.

situation now with the cabin:

Then time to start do something for famous trilex wheels. I suspect trilex is a dutch company, so famoust for those heavy duty wheels.
I started with the stuff that imho is the best matching to my porpouse, the front wheel of revell Bussing truck. revell made a very nice kit of him (have 3, dunno in which life I will ever build one..but got theme...). misteriously and here i dunno if in germany the trilex were different, they made quite a mess of the wheel. It looks like trilex, but misteriously deeper, at least looking the front one, that I plan to cast in resin cause sooo common of those old rusty guys..

here the real ones..

and here on the left original revell one with tire on, and to the right the one i started modify, just waiting some big scale resin bolts to complete it before primer..

while rear ones looks good.
To notice italery made several years ago an accessory box for whatever lookalike trilex wheels, but they dont look so nice (considering the giant scale..) to be fitted on a modern model..

thats why I think i´d go better with revell derivated ones..

Re: Classic Truck : Fiat 682N2 1/24

Little OT, but if you are here means thet deep inside you have the same fetish problems I have with those toys...

here some trucks I like a lot and probably will build up, between a racer and another

the 691, following truck of this 690. quite easy conversion starting from italeri plastic ..I suppose..

this last pic takes me in the dark side of the truck modelling...other guy I like to make, fiat 697/300 pc

and then the even later models. Iveco magirus 330 :

and..last but not least, the fetish of ANY italian truck lover (meaning it is basically NOT italian but an australian monster done under the name of INTERNATIONAL 4470). Basically a super powered iveco turbostar 3 axles, machine gunned, armored vehicle from mad max movie..
Deep deep love. If any kid from downunder land knows more about the international models BEFORE this, u will make me an happy (even more happy ) kid..

Trilex reinforced wheels, long 3 axles, big bullbar in the front. I want him boiled by desert sun, rosty and nearly dead like only there those can be...

arent they lovely?

Hello,

When I saw you starting this scratch, I thought you had a racing car transporter project.

May be these could help or change your mind!

These pics are from the web:

Or may be the 642 RN2 Bartoletti I saw in Spa

Re: Classic Truck : Fiat 682N2 1/24

And few more pics I have of the 690 of Jean-Paul Guyot who is a great truck scratcher. May be you know him?
Hello, Jean-Paul, si tu passes par là!

For the Trilex wheels, I think it is a standard wheel we could see on old truck until the end of the 70'. A friend of mine was talking to me about artillery wheels (roues artillerie in french), may be, these are the same.

I ask myself if you stop modelling, sometimes as each hour, you have something new!

Re: Classic Truck : Fiat 682N2 1/24

Ahah... U really tempt me Lolo with trucks losing the Ferrari I love....remember I am making a short run production of those cabin... So it can really be something for future projects..

The 690 guy is a real artist. Dunno him but maybe he can join the forum. Great great skill there.
Wonder if he made the trilex from scratch or not. Even if from artillery stuff I dunno there is something around in 1/24 scale.
Too nice model really, cant stop to look at it, as well as I never could imagine in france someone may know and like those ones, having u there excellent stuff made by renault.

And for spare time.... nice season is arriving and in Italy I got a very fast catamaran.
... And sail is my biggest passion ever, so don't be surprised if I can disappear in the next months lol

..but then I will be back more mad than ever..LOL.
