ABS system

I have a 98 K1500 Z71, having trouble with a ABS brakes going off everytime I come to a stop, occasionally I dont even have to push on the brake just turn a corner and they go off. The brake light or the ABS light on the dash dont light up. I have taken the speed sensors off front axles cleaned then and sanded the rust off where they mount and still the same problem. Any ideas ? The Haynes manual doesnt say much about them and what i find online so far doesnt help much either. There really should be a book that gives step by step troubleshooting instructions ( test this, if that works then test this, if that doesnt work then thats bad, etc etc ) Frustrated. Also, in the world of OBD scan tools, I know what ABS stands for ( brakes ) but no idea what SRS stands for, can anyone tell me. Thanks.

Re: ABS system

ABS is Anti lock brakes
SRS is Secondary restraint system , a la the airbags.

Re: ABS system

I would suggest 2 things.

1) Even though you're not getting any warning lights, faults in the ABS may be stored in "history". Spent $35-$40 to get the ABS scanned for codes.

2) The book you're looking for can be found at http://alldatadiy.com/.

when the abs comes on at very low speeds [when braking] this is usually NOT the front sensors but the hub bearings. the bearing grease gets rusted up this fouls the speed sensor. grease should be blue color. I have found the seal metal rusts away then water kills the hubs. I have greased the front hubs by removing the sensor and pump in a good amount of grease this may help you for a few months if the grease is rusted. to test this using an ac volt meter set to 1 volt range it must read 400MV or .4 volts ac or more. this is while you spin the hub at a good speed by hand. place a block under the control arm so the front axle is straight much easier. the sensors fail when the wiring gets chewed up so if the wiring is not damaged then the sensor is good. buy the hub as an assembly sensor is calibrated to the hub . test new the same way. on your weird abs activation with no foot on the brake , this is most likely a bad brake pedal switch. the switch closes when no brakes applied so the switch does fail. although with a scan tool abs able this will show.

SRS air bag. key on eng off it should show.

Re: ABS system

yup, even though never had a warning light it has stored ABS codes. one of them : right front solenoid circuit malfunction, I dont know what this is or where it is located ? also says Dynamic rear proportioning performance as well as both front speed sensors. OH boy, probably easier to pull the ABS fuse and go without it.

these vehicles I would pull the fuse. this is so you will not get into an accident and it will work like the old vehicles of the past. ABS is needed for front wheel drive that is a required feature because of the vehicle design. rear wheel drive it causes accidents IMO ! 1990's GM vehicles this was a dangerous experiment . new vehicles now work much more reliable . many with your vehicle in the past got used ABS units from the scrap yard for a few bucks as a cheap fix.

Re: ABS system

I disagree 10000000% that it is needed for FWD. My 1994 Stealth without ABS stops worlds better than my 2007 Grand Prix with ABS. In snow and ice the Grand Prix can get downright scary when the ABS decides to engage and won't let up.
