BMW i8

I'm calling this done, but I need to revisit the fit of the right side wing, considerable effort was made before primer to make these parts fit, it fit well in the primer stage but not now!

The Revell kit is actually pretty decent. The wheels were absolute garbage (undersized, sloppy tooling, indifferent plating...), but the Plamoz resin replacements are perfection. I've also gotten their C6 Cup and 918 Weissach Package wheels, very happy with all of them. Revell has a far better and more conventional way to mount their wheels now. There is electric motor and gas engine detail, but it's basically invisible in the model unless you remove the tiny inspection panel under the hatch lid. Spend your time on the interior, I put in some bright process blue seat belts. Masking the variety of paint colors/finishes is laborious but worth it.

Paint is TS-92 Metallic Orange (GT 86 color). Color scheme inspired by a Google search for something beyond the boring range of i8 colors...though Protonic Blue is very nice, but my Gravity Protonic Blue is going on my Tamiya ND MX5 Roadster

Re: BMW i8

That is nice!,i plan on getting the correct wheels from plamoz as well,it's a shame revell keeps putting out kits with undersized wheels.I'm looking forward to the new Miata as well, but the release date keeps getting pushed back.

Re: BMW i8

Beautiful as usual, but did you fit the Plamoz wheel in Revell tires? As far as I know both the tires and the wheels are undersized.

I used the Revell tires. They look fine this way; there is too much visual sidewall w/the kit tires and kit wheels, but the inner side of the tire has the correct appearing low-profile proportion, so you flip the tires. It's a brilliant solution.

This photo is from the 918 tires.

The side you see is what Revell considers the inside of the tire, with the larger diameter opening at the bead area, to fit Revell's larger diameter inner wheel lip. Visually there is way too much sidewall on what is supposed to be the outside of the tire (if you use Revell wheels). This inner side has a more correct appearing sidewall. This is what Plamoz exploits, allowing use of kit tires. Oh, my 918 kit has 3 rear tires and one front tire...

Whats the bet that the Revell designers draw up the wheel to the correct size, then add the inside lip & then scale that to the "correct size" & vola! Every Revell Wheel & Tire package needs upgrading to aftermarket wheels....

My suspicion is there are still kit designers at Revell that have no clue that a wheel diameter also includes the very visible bead lock part of the rim. That missing 1-2" even in scale is extremely obvious.

Re: BMW i8

Very nice build. The paint looks so good, on some of the photos, I thought it's a real car. Looking forward for the nd mx5 build, it's been out already?

Thanks!

The ND model should be out any day (it's due "Mid-December"), this is a review sample sent ahead of time.
