Horn Issue

I have been having intermediate issues with my horn in my 97 pontiac grand prix gt for several months. Now it's not working at all. I checked the relay and fuse and they're good. I know I have two horns behind my headlights. How do I go about diagnosing this issue? It would be great if it was just the horns however, I'm concerned this could be a wiring problem. Any input is greatly appreciated. I have a volt reader, where should I look first?

Re: Horn Issue

I checked the relay and fuse and they're good.

How did you check the relay?

While putting your finger on the relay, have someone hit the horn switch on the steering wheel....do you feel it click or hear it click?

If yes, then the circuit down the steering column is ok.....then you either have a bad relay, both horns are bad, or you have an open line to the horns or bad connections at the horns....

If the relay didn't click, pull the relay.....there are 4 terminal holes....two have power(use test light), and one goes to steering column and the other goes out to the horns....there is usually a wiring diagram on the relay......look for the terminal number on the diagram(usually, 85, 86, 87, and 30), that shows the coil being grounded(this is the circuit that goes up the steering column),,,attach a wire around that terminal of the relay( each terminal is numbered on the bottom of the relay, one loop should be enough), and re insert the relay.....now just ground the other end of that wire.....this grounds the relay(should feel it click) and sends power to the horns...if the horns go off,,,,your problem is in the steering column....if they don't, and your relay is good(you said it was), then you have more than one problem...

Re: Horn Issue

SOLVED I misread the fuse diagram then studied it some more and found the blown fuse. I feel like an idiot....

Re: Horn Issue

We all have those days. LOL I had an issue with my lights on my Stealth once and couldn't figure it out. I was checking wiring and everything then all of a sudden after hours of looking I found a blown fuse.

Re: Horn Issue

Haha, it took me two weeks to finally go over it one more time, then found it. I was doing research and came to the conclusion my coil spring in the steering wheel was bad. Thank goodness it ended up being just a 15 amp fuse. Oh well I learned some some things along the way.
