electric fuel pump

i have a 1984 Chevy pickup with a 350 4bbl and am installing an inline electric fuel pump. I have installed two Airtek pumps and both are failing after a short drive. Once it cools, it will restart but only for a short distance. The fuel pump is mounted under the chassis across from the fuel tank (only running fuel tank on drivers side). These pumps are 5-7 psi 30 gph. Don't know where my problem is. I used to have a Mr Gasket in line pump which lasted about a year installed same location. It is grounded to the chassis, has an inline fuel filter between tank and pump (comes with kit) and in line filter between pump and carburetor.

When it stalls, I let it sit for a while and then it will restart. However, it will only drive a short distance before stalling again.

I've seen a fuel pump run half speed (pull low amps) due to poor ground- but not at fuel pump ground- but at engine to chassis (frame) ground. Those braided cables tend to corrode in two. I'd check the grounds all the way back to the battery.

The biggest hint I got was that the tail lights were very dim when turned off- I could see them at night- seems the ground path was trying to go through them, since no other path could be found.

remove the upstream tank to pump filter. being a fuel pump motor you must have full fuel entering the suction side or the pump will over heat/rev... on the wiring you do need heavy gauge wire. measure volts across the pump motor. make sure you get at least 12volts with the engine running .... with normal voltage at the battery @14 volts the pump should have 12 volts ,, no less.. frame ground is what to use but you may have to run the ground up to the engine area if you do have too much volt drop.

I said to remove the upstream TANK TO PUMP FILTER ... That is the filter you say you installed on the fuel input to the pump... the fuel pump output is where the only filter goes. the fuel tank will have a screen .......... that screen is all you need to filter big particles. yes the intank filter sock is a screen ............ you put a filter as you say on the pump input that is gonna cause the pump to not get the proper amount of fuel / create suction, and get hot , over rev ETC,, upstream would be also used in the exhaust ....... the upstream O2 sensor is upstream before the converter .... down stream O2 is after the converter .. basically this is in reference to the flow of whatever fuel/air/exhaust/water ..

I have used this pump on 3 different cars and it has worked very well on all of them.

This pump and the ones you have mentioned need to be as close to the bottom of the tank as possible. They are fuel pushers, not suckers.

Yes, the instructions will say to install a filter prior to the pump (up stream). It is not needed as the "sock" in the tank is sufficient.

I like powering these pumps thru a relay with an in-line fuse between the relay and pump.
