turbo timers illegal

I had called up Black Widow Sydney to re-hook my turbo timer as the previous owner discon after installin the alarm.

Black widow advised me that it is illegal to leave your cars unattended whilst running. So be careful of dodgy insurance companies if you have a turbo timer fitted. I had advised mine that I had one and it was not connected in case they try to use it as a loop hole.

Usually just try to leave it on for a minute which is still long.

I don't think they would be ILLEGAL if anything it is just an OUT for the insurance companies.

Its not necessarily illegal to sell them. Its not illegal to sell a non-Austel-approved modem, its only illegal to connect it to the phone network. Its not illegal, I believe, to sell a radar detector, but it IS illegal to use it.

It only makes sense. How is the immobiliser supposed to work if you want to keep the engine running at the same time - one of them has to give. Why leave the engine running for some jumped up little turkey to simply jump in and drive off? What's it going to hurt you to sit in the car for a minute while the turbo cools off, or even slow down for that last km before you get to your destination?

Turbo timers

Nothing illegal about turbo timers, nothing illegal about having one fitted to your car, but I'm fairly sure it is illegal to leave your car running & unattended.
Save a few $$$ & use the human turbo timer method, YOURSELF :ylsuper (these smilies rock!!!)

That makes sense, that you arent meant to leave your car unattended. So just be somewhere near your car while its on timer yeah?

Also, many turbo timers have security measures to keep people from driving off.

My immobiliser activates even when the timer is ticking down.. and still cant be turned off without the key.. and once the engine stops, it wont restart. so the immobiliser is just as effective as it always would have been. My alarm arms also, while the engine is running. And whats more, my blitz turbo timer kills the ignition if the car moves so much as a single inch.

insurance cant complain about that

turbo timers

The only potential negative with turbo timers (other than cost) is the very unlikely event of it malfuctioning & not shutting the engine down, especially if you've already walked away unware.

Admittedly, it's highly unlikely, but we are talking about electronics, & working in that field, I have to say, gadgets do some strange things sometimes

Well that has my vote for the stupidest thing I've heard in a while. What the hell business is it of anyone but me, if I want to leave my car running and not attended? Stupid bloody idea. btw, what country we talking? I know Australia has some fairly weird laws about various things - anyone know what the story is in NZ?

there is no law for it as yet... although most alarm makers wont cover your car if its stolen and the turbo timer is set (although how woudl they know unless they are stalking you!!! :P)

Hey don't shoot the messenger

I see where your coming from, but I guess there's a "MICROSCOPIC!!!" chance of the car engaging a gear (stuffed auto, manual impossible!!!) somehow & then ploughing into something or someone. I've seen a car (auto) on one of those "crazy drivers" TV shows that had done this exact senario.

I had an incident where the Fiancée decided to wash my car for me.. She slapped it in neutral started the car put the hand brake on.. then moved her brothers car..

I was doing the brakes on her parents car when I could here the ol' V8 common whore (broop Broop broop) down the driveway then !BANG!... into the house across the road... lucky i can laugh about it now.. If i remember correctly I stood up and covered my face with my hands...
Funny thing is she doesn't want to wash the car any more... heheh

The law in NZ is you cannot leave your car unattended while running... pathetic but true.

But really who actually listens to that rule??
One thing with alot of turbo timers is the handbreak sensor thing, so it wont work until the handbreak is on... seem ok like that.

The worse one is the alarms that start your car for you.... people leave it in gear and starts it... a guy I know's dad left his car in gear. then he goes out to drive it, starts it with the key and it takes off !! runs over a letterbox and into the neighbours, LOL!
